Bronx Bombers are dealing with some serious injury issues just a few weeks ahead of the 2023 MLB season opening day. The spring training, which was originally supposed to help the players get in form, has landed them on the injury list, thus hampering their regular season campaign. The latest one to fall prey to it is the Yankees’ yet another catcher, Jose Trevino.
The New York Yankees acquired Jose Trevino from the Texas Rangers via trade in 2022. The catcher had one of his most successful seasons in 2022. He won Golden Glove Award and Platinum Glove Award and was also named to the All-Star team as the reserve catcher. Moving on to 2023, the fans held high expectations from Jose owing to his success last year. However, the devil has arrived to spoil the party.
Jose Trevino Suffers Wrist Injury, Likely To Return For Opening Day
The New York Yankees’ major chunk of defense is sitting on the injury list, and the 2023 MLB season opening day is on March 30. The latest one to bite the dust is one of the last remaining catchers, Jose Trevino. According to reports, Trevino suffered a right wrist injury during a game against the Boston Red Sox. He also underwent an X-ray, which came back negative for any fractures. However, he did experience some swelling and discomfort in his wrist.
Meanwhile, New York Yankees manager, Aaron Boone, broke the news of Jose’s injury on Tuesday and said that the injury is not that severe, and he expects Jose Trevino to be ready for the opening day. Losing Trevino is terrible news for the Yankees, who have absolutely no catching depth in the bullpen. They have already lost Ben Rortvedt, Josh Breaux, and Austin Wells to respective injuries. Moreover, the only experienced catcher, Kyle Higashioka, remains unavailable for the opening day due to his participation in the World Baseball Classic 2023.
Yankees Shortstop Candidate Oswald Peraza Hits Off His First Home Run
Shortstop candidate Oswald Peraza elevated his offensive numbers against the Blue Jays by hitting a home run off Thomas Hatch’s pitch. The homer traveled 408-foot long and gave the Yankees a lead in the third. Peraza is the most favored candidate in the shortstop battle as his defensive skills are better than both his competitors, Anthony Volpe and Isiah Kiner Falefa.
However, Peraza must pick up his bat and put up enough numbers to tackle Anthony Volpe‘s unreal form. Volpe is hitting .321 with 2 home runs and 2 RBIs in 10 spring training game appearances. Moreover, Volpe has shown some acrobatic skills in the field as well. Hence, despite strong backing from the New York Yankees front office, Peraza could lose his starting shortstop position if he fails to put up numbers in the offense. He still has two weeks in spring training before opening day commences.
