Yankees Spring Training Updates: Oswald Peraza Suffers Injury As Anthony Volpe Shine At Shortstop

The New York Yankees are facing another injury concern as their primary shortstop candidate suffers a minor injury.

Recently, the Yankees faced Pittsburgh Pirates in their 11th spring training fixture. They took a massive lead in the second innings as they went up by 6-0 and finished the game 9-2 at the end of the ninth innings. The main key takeaway from the fixture remained Aaron Judge’s maiden home run. The captain has finally opened his home run account for the 2023 season.

Meanwhile, the top prospects did not miss out on some action as Jasson Dominguez, and Anthony Volpe delivered impressive performances. Amid all this, the bad news is coming in from the New York Yankees camp. With just three weeks to the 2023 MLB season opening day, another important roster member has entered the injury list and missed the game against the Pirates.

Injuries are raining down the New York Yankees camp with just three weeks to the regular season opening day. As many as six top defensive players are out with respective injuries. Meanwhile, another top prospect’s injury has the Yankees on its toes. The Bombers’ top shortstop prospect, Oswald Peraza, missed the game against the Pirates due to a leg injury. According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Peraza is dealing with leg soreness, due to which he had to miss out on the previous game.

However, Boone assured that the injury is minor, and the shortstop is expected to be back for Thursday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees will be closely monitoring his progress and hoping that he can return to action soon. Peraza is a key player for the Yankees as he is the most sought-after candidate for the starting shortstop position this season. While the competitors, Anthony Volpe and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, are putting up good numbers, Peraza is likely to sweep the position due to management’s backing.

While Oswald Peraza rests at the camp, his most formidable shortstop competitor, Anthony Volpe, is dazzling at spring training. After an impressive performance at second and third base, the 21-year-old got a chance to start at shortstop against the Pirates. Volpe very well understood the importance of the opportunity and grabbed it with both hands. He hit 1-2 with two walks and one strikeout.

Moreover, Anthony Volpe was electric in the field with acrobatic moves. He even covered for Aaron Hicks, who fumbled in left field. Anthony is making a strong case for himself. At this rate, it’s going to get more challenging for the Yankees’ front office to decide on a name for the starting shortstop position. The only thing that can go against Volpe is his lack of minor-league experience. Apart from that, he is the perfect starter.
