Oswald Peraza, for long, has been touted as the New York Yankees’ next superstar infielder. However, the hype around him hasn’t translated into something meaningful to impact the field. He has had a few chances in 2022 and also in 2023 during September after the team failed to qualify for playoffs.
Although, Oswald Peraza’s career graph has only gone down ever since. Regardless, with the new season on the horizon, the Yankees had planned to place the infielder on the bench, as shortstop depth in case Anthony Volpe had a bad day. However, his unfortunate injury has put Yanks in a spot with just three weeks to opening day.
Oswald Peraza Out With Shoulder Injury As Yankees Struggle For Depth
The New York Yankees are facing a setback as talented prospect Oswald Peraza finds himself sidelined with a shoulder injury. Just three weeks ahead of the 2024 season opening day, Peraza has picked up an injury. He played back-to-back spring games in the first week. But he was scratched off the lineup shortly after, and it has been ten days since his absence. Recently, skipper Aaron Boone shared an update and confirmed that Peraza is undergoing imaging as his injury has worsened. The future course of action is still uncertain as the team does not necessarily know what’s wrong with the infielder’s shoulders.
But certainly, Peraza will skip the opening day, leaving the team in a precarious position as they grapple with depth concerns in their roster. With Anthony Volpe locked in at shortstop, Oswald Peraza was largely anticipated to act as a backup. But with his absence, the Yankees have nobody except Oswaldo Cabrera to fill the role. With the roster already depleted, the Bronx Bombers find themselves facing an uphill battle to field a competitive lineup. Non-roster invite Kevin Smith is an option to bolster the depth. Besides him, the team is actively seeking solutions to mitigate the impact of Peraza’s absence and strengthen their lineup for the upcoming season. Overall, as the Yanks navigate through the uncertainties and challenges brought about by injuries, the team remains focused on their ultimate goal of contending for a championship.
Amed Rosario Ditch Yanks For Rays
The New York Yankees missed out on a tough chance to land infield depth this off-season. As per Joel Sherman, the Bronx Bombers pursued former Dodgers infielder Amed Rosario this off-season. But the infielder ditched the team’s $4 million offer to accept $1.5 million from the Tampa Bay Rays simply because he felt better about his chances of getting at-bats with the Rays. With Yank’s roster filled with stars, Rosario prioritized his playing time over money.
However, the New York Yankees finally have an opening for an infielder in the aftermath of Oswald Peraza’s injury. It could be a big-time opportunity lost for Amed Rosario and the Bronx Bombers. But regardless, what is done is done. The New York-based outfit has to move on and seek apt replacements for Oswald Peraza before time runs out.
