Mercedes Will Have A Problem If They Fail To Compete At Front During British Grand Prix, Claims 1996 F1 World Champion!

Mercedes have struggled all season to compete with frontrunners Red Bull and Ferrari. The Silver Arrows are third in the constructors\’ championship after being the champions for eight straight seasons. After nine races so far, Mercedes clinched only five podiums without a single race win in 2022. The German racing team hopes that their fortunes will turn around in Silverstone. They are planning on bringing some crucial upgrades during the British Grand Prix weekend. Mercedes are desperate to win, and Silverstone could be their only chance of making a comeback in the championship battle.

However, former British F1 driver Damon Hill claimed that Mercedes would have a major problem if they struggled to compete against Red Bull and Ferrari in Silverstone. The 1996 F1 world champ also believes that Mercedes engineers back at the factory have had a pretty rough time. Also, they might end up jumping out of the window if the Silver Arrows continue to Struggle at the British Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, the German outfit has insisted that they desperately want to win the race at Hamilton and Russell\’s home circuit. The Silver Arrows have some updates coming in to bridge the gap between the Mercedes drivers and the championship leaders. After the race in Canada, team principal Toto Wolff said that his team would have a chance of winning in Silverstone due to a smoother and more conventional circuit. In the last purpose-built track in Barcelona, Mercedes showed some real pace which the team expects to reappear in Silverstone after struggling across three street circuits in Monaco, Baku, and Montreal. 

Mercedes Needs To Show Some Competitive Pace In Silverstone

Hill was asked if Mercedes had the best chance of winning a race in Silverstone this season. The 61-year-old responded that the Silver Arrows still have a few more chances at other permanent venues. Moreover, Damon stressed that the team needed to show some potential during the weekend. Hill pointed out that the past few races have been on street circuits. He said other circuits like Spa, billiard table smooth, Monza, Silverstone, and Paul Ricard could suit Mercedes and their W13 car.

Hill further said that a win for Red Bull in Austria seems guaranteed. But, Damon admitted that strange things could happen at any time. The Briton felt that if Mercedes have the opportunity to show their competitive pace in Silverstone. However, if they fail, the Silver Arrows have got a real problem. Hill concluded, \”I think people might be jumping off windows in Brackley if that happens.\”
