New York Yankees ace pitcher, Gerrit Cole, was seen leading the pitchers’ group against the team’s powerful hitters in spring training.
The 2023 MLB season spring training is currently underway, and the New York Yankees have gathered in Tampa, Florida, for the same. The pitchers and catchers were the first ones to arrive, as the rest of the roster invitees joined the party a few days later. The Yankees will have their first spring training matchup against the Phillies on the 25th of February.
Meanwhile, a few journalists are stationed at the Yankees base camp to cover the entire action. As per the latest updates, the pitchers and hitters matched up against each other yesterday for training. Moreover, the Bronx Bombers ace pitcher, Gerrit Cole, led the pitchers’ group while facing hitting giants like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
Gerrit Cole Lead The Way For The Pitchers While Facing Yanks Ace Strikers
Cole, who signed a record-breaking nine-year, $324 million contract with the Yankees in 2019, has been a dominant force on the mound since joining the team. Last season, Gerrit Cole had 33 starts and clocked record-breaking 257 strikeouts and a 3.50 ERA. He led the entire rotation single-handedly in the absence of key starters. Meanwhile, this year at the spring training, the pitcher is back to his leadership duties.
Gerrit Cole led the pitchers’ group, which included Carlos Rodon and Luis Severino, during yesterday’s training session. The pitchers had a face-off with the New York Yankees’ key sluggers, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Anthony Rizzo. As per Cole, this set of hitters helps the pitchers prepare better as they leave you no room for errors. Moreover, Cole stated he is happy with Carlos Rodon and Luis Severino’s throws so far. He likes Luis’ horsepower and said he has a strong arm. Moreover, speaking of Rodon, Cole said the southpaw is settling well with the team and looks in good shape.
Matt Blake Excited Seeing The Pitching Lineup In Action
New York Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake stood behind the mound and watched Gerrit Cole, Luis Severino, and Carlos Rodon train. Speaking about his thoughts, Blake said he is excited to have such extensive talent in the bullpen this season. Blake further elaborated, saying getting the pitchers together was step 1 of the training. He wants the lineup to train together in order to understand each other better and push one another to the max of their capabilities.
While the pitching trio had a field day at Tampa, the Yankees front office’s worries are far from over. They have an incomplete rotation, as Frankie Montas and Nestor Cortes are on the injury list. Both the pitchers are ruled out indefinitely at the moment. Further, the Bombers are looking out for options in the bullpen, which includes Clarke Schmidt and Domingo German. We’ll wait for an official word on the issue from the Yankees camp.
