Domingo German, the New York Yankees starting pitcher, lived the highest point of his career earlier this season. He pitched a perfect game after decades for the Yankee organization. However, barring that one outing, his performance on the mound has been persistently inconsistent. In 19 starts, he has recorded a 4.56 ERA with 1.077 WHIP.

Domingo German’s most recent outing was shelled by the Yankees last minute owing to some armpit injury concern. While he did return as a reliever, the team ended up on the losing side. Amid these tough situations, German has been caught in a major off-field controversy that may end his 2023 MLB season prematurely.

Ahead of the series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays, the New York Yankees made a shocking announcement. Through an official press release, the club informed that starting pitcher Domingo German has “voluntarily entered inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse.” He is placed on the restricted list until the treatment concludes. While the club refrained from revealing any specific details, they urged German to focus on his health and well-being. This isn’t the first time the pitcher has been caught in a controversy. He earlier faced a suspension for violating the Yankees’ domestic violence policy. Having said that, this particular setback could end German’s 2023 MLB season prematurely. Also, since he is placed on the restricted list, the pitcher won’t earn a single penny for the rest of the season.

Brian Cashman, Yankees general manager, issued a first response to the situation. He said that Domingo German’s alcohol problem goes way beyond. Recently, the club was made aware of an incident that prompted them to take necessary steps. The GM further added that right now, he is most concerned about German and his family. The pitcher has long been a part of the Yankee family. And now that he has got himself tangled in such a serious situation, the prayers will always remain with him. Cashman also added that the Yankee organization will extend all the necessary support to Domingo German. Hopefully, the steps taken today will benefit him for the rest of his life. Lastly, Brian Cashman confirmed that German may not pitch this season as he is dealing with a more serious situation.

Ahead of the series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman informed the clubhouse about Domingo German’s situation. He said that the pitcher won’t pitch this season and the reasons contributing to it. Gerrit Cole, German’s fellow rotation partner, said that atmosphere in the clubhouse was sad. It’s a tough situation that affects everyone in the clubhouse since everybody cares about each other.

On the other hand, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Domingo German’s alcohol situation goes years back. While he recovered over time, it’s sad to see these things happen again. Having said that, the skipper hoped that the pitcher would get the right kind of help that would point him in the right direction in life beyond baseball. With German out, Jhony Briton is likely to take his rotation spot in the near future.
