Red Bull driver Max Verstappen is swiftly cruising to his third consecutive world championship. He has already won five races, while his team Red Bull has won all seven races that have happened this year so far. Clearly, they are way ahead of the rest of the teams in the constructor title. Verstappen is also leading the drivers’ championship with 53 points ahead of his teammate Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez, who is in second place. Hence, other drivers are nowhere near the reigning champion.
Other teams are nowhere near the Austrian team. Hence, it looks like it will be another easy victory in dominating style for Red Bull this year. The cost cap era has not been kind to the other teams since everybody else has suffered a lot while building their car. But Red Bull, with Adrian Newey as the chief technical officer, has masterminded the development of the spectacular RB19 car. Team Red Bull has proved this year how much important the car is, as a great racer alone cannot win races or titles. It is also believed by many that Red Bull can win all the races this year. There is certainly a good possibility. However, when discussing the same with their champion Max Verstappen, his response was not so inspiring. Why so? Keep reading to find out.
Max Verstappen Does Not Believe Red Bull Can Win All The Races In 2023
Anyway, Red Bull has been facing no competition since last year. Last season the Milton Keynes team won 17 races, among which Max Verstappen alone won 15 races. That is a record in itself for a team and a driver. The last time any team won maximum races was McLaren, who won 15 races from 16 in 1988. Second was Mercedes, who won 19 of 21 races in 2016. But as it seems, the Dutchman is on the path to breaking his own record. Everybody knows that Red Bull has a good chance to win all the races this season.
But somehow, Max Verstappen could not care less. In an interview with ESPN, the Dutchman made it clear that, “No, I don’t care if Red Bull wins all the races this year. It has never happened before.” Apparently, last year was pretty exciting as well. However, for Max, the most essential thing is that I win the championship. Nothing else matters for the 25-year-old two-time champion. The Dutchman believes that the way they have been performing in the current season, it is certainly possible. However, it is too unrealistic to think that way.
The Dutchman Explains Why He Thinks Winning Every Race Is Unrealistic
Max Verstappen further explained that anything can go wrong in a whole year. Nobody knows how long the engine or some specific part of the car will keep working as well as it has this season so far. The floor of the Red Bull car is very fast, and the collaboration with Honda as the engine partner has been fruitful so far. Even then, winning all 22 races (excluding the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix) is a little bit too far-fetched for Verstappen.
He added that many years ago, McLaren came very close to pulling this off. But in 1988, there were only 16 races, unlike the current season. Still, McLaren fell one Grand Prix win short, and Mercedes in 2016 fell two race wins short of winning all the races that season. In that year, there was fierce competition between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg of the Mercedes team. Eventually, the latter emerged as the champion in 2016.
