LeBron James is on the verge of breaking Kareem Abdul-all-time Jabbar\’s scoring record in the NBA. After surpassing Karl Malone in the 2021–22 NBA season, James will be aiming for the storied Abdul-Jabbar scoring mark, standing since 1989. LeBron James is expected to surpass Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA\’s all-time top scorer during the 2022–23 season. James possesses a greater point total than Abdul-Jabbar when regular-season and postseason totals are included. But for the Akron native to surpass the historical regular-season scoring mark set by the great center, 1,326 points are required.

King James recently discussed the possibility of breaking the record during a chat with the media on Monday. James said that he only considers achieving the milestone after seeing a social media article detailing it. When he reads how many games he could need to score more than Abdul-Jabbar to surpass him, that gives him a reason to achieve more. Those times, James said, let him appreciate the significance of the accomplishment he is going to do. According to LeBron James, when his name is mentioned among the greatest NBA players in history, it brings up painful memories from his early years.

When Can LeBron Break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar\’s Record?

Since 1989, the 38,387 points scored by Abdul-Jabbar have been the all-time NBA record for most points scored. And with his current total of 37,026 points, LeBron James is only 1,325 points short of the all-time record. The four-time MVP is entering his 20th NBA season with a game average of 27.1 points. Only 48 games would be required for him to reach the milestone if he scored at that pace in 2021–22. 

However, for LeBron to surpass the legend, he would need to score slightly more than 16 points per contest over an entire 82-game season. This does not sound like an unachievable task, given Lebron James\’ skills and prowess. To do so, the 37-year-old will have to avoid injuries and play at least 45-50 games in the season.
