Luis Severino, a New York Yankees farm system product, spent eight years in Bronx before a hideous season led to a fallout. Severino’s tenure in pinstripes was marred with injuries and inconsistencies. In 2023, he suffered lat strain and was awful on the mound with 6.65 ERA is 18 starts.

With the Yankees’ patience running out, the front office decided to release him during the off-season. Interestingly, Mets extended an olive branch to a hurt Luis Severino and signed him in a short term contract. Meanwhile, in his first meet-up with his former team this year, Luis opened up on the key difference he felt in Citi Field compared to the Yankee Stadium.

Luis Severino missed a chance to pitch against his former team, the New York Yankees, in the first subway series of the season as Mets coach Carlo Mendoza changed the rotation at the last minute. Regardless, the right-handed pitcher had a great time meeting his old friends at Citi Field, who apparently teased him for missing the start. However, Severino said that he is eager to pitch in the next Subway series at Yankee Stadium. Indeed, Luis is enjoying his time at Citi Field with less pressure compared to the Bronx. He has had a 3.29 ERA in 15 starts with a total of 71 strikeouts. Besides the pressure, Severino is enjoying sporting a beard.

The Yankees’ infamous no facial hair policy kept Luis Severino from donning a beard in the past decade. But now, with the Mets, the pitcher didn’t miss the opportunity. Meanwhile, despite an ugly fallout, Severino had nothing but good things to say about his former team. He affirmed that he still loves the Yankees and has no grudges, as without the chances he received in the Bronx, his major league wouldn’t have panned out the way he did. “They gave me the opportunity to be somebody,” Luis said. Interestingly, Severino had the last laugh in the iconic face with his ex-team as the Mets secured a dominant series victory on Wednesday. With Luis out, his rotation peers kept the Yankees hitters quiet in Citi Field to take a staggering 12-2 win in the series finale and enter the .500 ball club in the NL East.

New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge stated that he was relieved for not having to face ex-teammate Luis Severino in the recently concluded Mets series. Judge added that Luis has some great stuff and can trouble hitters on a good day. And this year, particularly, Severino has had a turnaround due to change in scenery in Citi Field.

However, Luis Severino wants otherwise. He praised Aaron Judge ahead of the Subway series for his unreal form and said he is excited to compete with him in the next Subway series. “I like to compete so it would be really, really fun to face him,” Severino said. Luis will get his due during July 23-24 when Mets will travel to the Yankee Stadium.
