The New York Yankees are having one of the most exciting spring training battles this season. Two young prospects, Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza, are battling it out hard to claim the starting shortstop job. While Volpe has dominated his case with the bat, Peraza takes an edge on the defensive front. With just two weeks to opening day, the position is still up for grabs for both contenders. On the other hand, the fans and Yankees owners are enjoying the battle as it promises an exciting display of skill set.

Speaking on the battle, Yankees owner, Hal Steinbrenner, said he would take an active part in the decision-making of whether or not these prospects stand a chance at a promotion to the major league. While their numbers in spring training are impressive, Hal says it’s not that simple, as the team needs to weigh in on a lot of factors. The first is that playing in Tampa is completely different from playing in New York. Moreover, the team has to analyze whether or not they are ready to take up the responsibility on the big stage. However, Hal did not rule out any possibilities and said anything is possible, and they will have a lengthy discussion on the matter.

In the meantime, Anthony Volpe is completely focused on his game and is improving his skills each day. As the New York Yankees boss, Hal Steinbrenner, watched the game on the sidelines, Volpe was having a fantastic day on the field. He made two major stops on the defense and hit off a run in the sixth innings. Volpe’s numbers are as good as any regular major league player in this spring session. Hence, overlooking those is going to be a daunting task for the Yanks.

Oswald Peraza has been the most favored shortstop candidate for the Yankees’ front office in their battle. If some fan theories are to be believed, the battle is just a mere gimmick, and Peraza is already the selected candidate for the role. If so happens, Volpe will have to start another year in the minors.
