While the New York Yankees kicked off spring training on Wednesday, its pursuit of a pitching staff upgrade is still continuing. The team has sorted out rotational issues with Marcus Stroman’s signing. But as far as the relief corps is concerned, the team is lacking key pieces in the bullpen.

The shortage of relief arms was a ripple effect of Juan Soto’s trade as the Yankees shipped four major league-ready pitchers to the San Diego Padres. Regardless, in a fresh off-season move, the Bronx Bombers signed an ex-Yankee pitcher in a much cheaper and steal deal. To accommodate the new signing further, the club dropped Jasson Dominguez from the roster.

In a surprising turn of events, Lou Trivino has made a return to the New York Yankees on a short-term deal. The pitcher skipped the 2023 season due to an elbow injury that worsened into Tommy John surgery. Later in the off-season, the team released the reliever. However, Lou is back in the Bronx in a stunning reunion deal. As per reports, Yanks signed Trivino on a base salary of $1.25 million, which is much lower than his $4.1 million market value. However, since the pitcher was unable to fetch a deal due to his injury concerns, he had to settle. Besides, Lou Trivino also attained a club option for the 2025 season.

Interestingly, the Bombers made a bold move to make space for the reliever on the 40-man roster. Jason Dominguez, who is recovering from Tommy John’s surgery, has been moved to the 60-day injury list. It’s important to note that Jasson’s return is not expected until summer. Thus, the New York Yankees intend to utilize his roster spot to fill the key pieces. Having said that, Lou Trivino made 25 appearances with the Yanks in 2022 and clocked a 1.66 ERA. His talent and skill set is well proven. However, it remains to be seen how the relief pitcher recovers from the Tommy John surgery. Overall, Lou Trivino’s return to the Bronx Bombers on a short-term deal represents a significant addition to the team’s bullpen. It will provide them with a reliable and experienced arm to rely on in crucial moments throughout the season.

Meanwhile, Jasson Dominguez is recovering impressively well from his UCL tear Tommy John surgery. The prospect has been grinding hard in Tampa, along with the rest of the roster. Having said that, as far as the next steps towards a complete recovery are concerned, Jasson is set to start his throwing program after Monday, i.e., February 19. Moreover, the Martian could start swinging the bat by the end of spring training camp next month.

Jasson Dominguez made a splash debut in pinstripes last season. In a mere eight games, the prospect scripted franchise history with a home run spree. However, a UCL tear injury shunted his growth and ended his debut season prematurely. Regardless, the Yankees are banking on the Martian to produce an awe-inspiring comeback in the latter half of the 2024 MLB season.
