CHECKOUT: New York Yankees’ Leading Fifth Starter Contender Has No Innings Cap!

The New York Yankees are now forced to look for a fifth starter after ace and reigning AL CY Young pitcher Gerrit Cole fell prey to an unfortunate injury. Cole injured his pitching elbow and was diagnosed with nerve inflammation. That will keep him out for at least 10-12 weeks.

That being said, since the external options are limited due to the depleted free-agent market, the New York Yankees have no choice but to look for internal reinforcements. With opening day inching closer, a potential front-runner for the fifth starter’s role has been allowed to pitch as much as he can or wants without any restrictions placed.

Luis Gil Has No Inning Cap As He Contests Fifth Starter’s Role!

As the New York Yankees prepare for opening day, one of the intriguing storylines surrounding the team is the emergence of Luis Gil as a legitimate contender for a spot in the starting rotation. With Gerrit Cole sidelined due to an elbow injury, the club has a hole to fill in the starting rotation. While Cody Poteet and Will Warren have emerged as the front runners for the temporary spot, Luis Gil is also fighting for a roster spot. Gil has been a highly regarded pitching prospect in the Yanks’ farm system. He has long been touted for his electric stuff and promising potential on the mound. However, the pitcher’s career has largely been impacted by recurring injury concerns.

Last season, Luis Gil missed time with Tommy John surgery. Nevertheless, this spring, Gil is here to make an impact. Having said that, what makes Gil’s candidacy particularly noteworthy is the revelation that the talented young pitcher will not be subject to any innings restrictions. Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said the team intends to allow Gil to pitch without any innings cap and ensure he builds up gradually. While the pitcher has been optioned out of the spring cap early, he still very much remains in fifth starter’s contention. On the other hand, for Gil, the absence of innings restrictions represents a vote of confidence in his ability to handle the rigors of a full MLB season. The team is betting on him despite his concerning injury history. It’s Luis’ job to live up to the expectations and unleash his full potential.

Gerrit Cole is making New York Yankees front office work overtime this season. After an elbow injury ruled him out for 10-12 weeks, the team has a gigantic hole to fill in the starting rotation. While internal options are being sorted out, the front office are still open to outside reinforcements.

As per Jon Heyman of the NY Post, the Yankees have re-engaged talks with free agent Jordan Montgomery. The World Series champion earlier reportedly denied being open for a potential reunion with the Bronx Bombers. However, with opening day closing in, Montgomery’s options are running out. It would be interesting to see how Yanks convinced Jordan to return to the Bronx.
