REPORTS: Yankees Officially Leading As They Re-Engage Talks With Jordan Montgomery After Blake Snell-Giants Deal

The New York Yankees have exactly a week left to figure out the best possible lineup for the opening day series scheduled against Houston Astros. However, with Gerrit Cole’s elbow injury, the initial plans went to dust as Yanks stare at a wide gap in their starting pitching rotation.

To address the concern, the New York Yankees turned to coveted free agent Blake Snell. But the ambitious monetary stakes once again played spoilsport as Snell landed with San Francisco Giants in a two-year short term deal. Having said that, the Yanks have now sorted desperate help from a World Series winner pitcher for an potential reunion deal.

Before the New York Yankees step into the new season with an incomplete pitching rotation, the front office intends to exhaust all external options. After failing to convince Blake Snell to lower his ask, the Bronx Bombers are now eyeing a reunion with Jordan Montgomery. The starting pitcher won a World Series with the Texas Rangers in his walk year in 2023 and subsequently upped his stakes this free agency. With days left for opening day, Montgomery remains without a contract. He is seeking a Carlos Rodon-esque $162 million deal. But has failed to find suitors willing to shell out such money. Having said that, in a quest for a final off-season play, the Yanks apparently have re-entered Jordan Montgomery sweepstakes.

Jon Heyman of the NY Post reports that the New York Yankees and Jordan Montgomery are back in contact. The Yankee front office reportedly dialed up Scott Boras for a positive discussion about Jordan’s willingness to reunite in the Bronx. Notably, the pitcher had been a part of the Yankee core until he was traded in 2022, citing his ineffectiveness in playoffs. However, after stepping out of the Bronx, Montgomery relaunched his career with a bang and won a World Series last year. Not only that, earlier rumors suggested that Jordan is still carrying some bad blood, and New York isn’t his first choice. The starting pitcher intends to extend his stay in Texas, and both parties are contemplating a middle ground. “Sources say they are back in contact. A gap exists, but at least they’re talking,” said Jon Heyman.

Blake Snell Sings With San Francisco Giants

In a major setback for the New York Yankees, Blake Snell is off the market. The two-time CY Young pitcher agreed to a two-year $62 million contract, with an exit clause after year one with San Francisco Giants. The Yanks, who were heavily invested in the sweepstakes, lost an opportunity to replace AL CY Young pitcher with a NL CY Young pitcher in the starting rotation.

Gerrit Cole has been ruled out for 10-12 weeks with an elbow nerve inflammation injury. Thus, the Yankees were expected to sign Blake Snell. However, Snell’s ambitious ask put off the Bronx Bombers. Due to soaring $300 million payroll, it was difficult for Yankee leadership to accommodate Snel and thus the sweepstakes fell apart.
