The New York Yankees pitching staff has dealt a lot of damage owing to the ongoing injury crisis. A large set of pitchers as well as relievers, continue to serve time on the injury list ever since the commencement of the 2023 MLB season. None of them have been able to recover fully step on the mound wearing the pinstripes. Hence, the current depth has depleted completely.

Now, to further add to the misery, another veteran starter is about to miss his next start as a result of an infection. Nestor Cortes, the second starter behind Yankees ace, Gerrit Cole, has had a rough couple of outings past week. His usual nasty rhythm looked off, and he looked all over the place. Meanwhile, the club’s manager has come out to address the issue and provided a logical explanation of the same.

Nestor Cortes To Miss His Next Start For The Yankees Due To Throat Infection

New York Yankees’ second starter, Nestor Cortes, had a huge role to play this season. In the midst of an injury crisis, Cortes got promoted to second place in the rotation. However, after an initial good start, the pitcher faced a slump that worsened over time. Over the past weekend, Cortes started against Texas Rangers on the road trip and gave away seven runs, which elevated his ERA to 4.91 from 3.49. However, Aaron Boone, the Bombers skipper, provided logical reasoning behind the slump.

Boone confirmed that Nestor Cortes is suffering from strep throat, which hampered his outing against the Rangers last week. He has been under the weather over the past many days. Hence, the team has decided to give him an extra set of days to recover, meaning that Cortes’ next scheduled start would get delayed. The pitcher was scheduled to pitch on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Gerrit Cole will fill in for the weekend, and Nestor will return back on Monday to pitch against the Athletics if he responds well to the treatment. Overall it’s a tough weekend ahead of the Yankees as they tackle the best team of the season, the Bay Rays, in the absence of the key lineup.

Carlos Rodon To Undergo Fresh Round Of Testing

In the meantime, the New York Yankees await the return of their best buy of the off-season, Carlos Rodon. Rodon, with a lengthy injury history, landed on IL prior to the season and messed up the Bombers’ plan of action. Moreover, the pitcher has been suffering setbacks after setbacks during rehab. The latest one is back tightness. The Southpaw’s back has been nagging him for the past couple of weeks and refused to die down.

Apparently, Carlos Rodon is not feeling any pain but, at the same time, is struggling with the windup. Hence, the Yankees ordered him to undergo a fresh round of testing to figure out the root cause of the problem. Aaron Boone, the manager, said Rodon will undergo tests on Thursday, and they will get a clearer picture of his status in a couple of days. Overall, the long wait continues.
