Gleyber Torres & Juan Soto

The New York Yankees, in full consciousness, traded Juan Soto from the Padres this off-season on a one-year guarantee. Soto remains one of the most perennial hitters in MLB. In a short span of time, the slugger has achieved enormous success, which places him in line for a future Hall of Fame recipient.

Having said that, owing to the inflated free agency market, Juan Soto is mostly unlikely to extend his stay at the New York Yankees beyond the 2024 season. Not only that, but another key infielder is entering his walk year this season. That gives rise to a dual headache that the Yanks would have to endure next free agency.

Will Yankees Extend Juan Soto, Gleyber Torres In 2025?

Juan Soto, the New York Yankees’ newest hitting sensation, remains on a short leash. He has been traded to the Bronx on a one-year guarantee. While the Yanks stand as perennial contenders to land him in free agency next year, Soto’s skyrocketing market value could pose a roadblock. As per current standards, Soto is worth $500 million. The Yanks already have four players committed on a $118 million payroll. Thus, it’s highly unlikely that Soto will fit in the $300 million payroll next year. As far as extension is concerned, if Soto loves playing in New York, he could listen to an offer. But then, too, it’s unlikely the slugger will sign on to anything as he would be tempted to test free agency waters in order to fetch high market value.

On the other hand, Gleyber Torres is also entering his walk year. The infielder, despite being a constant subject of trade rumors, produced a successful offensive season for the Bronx in 2023. He ended up as the team’s second-best run producer. Thus, the Yanks awarded Torres with a record $15 million arbitration contract this off-season. However, it’s unlikely the Yanks could afford to extend both Torres and Juan Soto. The second baseman, if he manages to capitalize on the 2023 season form, could manage to increase his market value. And the Yankees remain shot on money right now. Overall, as the next offer inches closer, the Bronx Bombers have a couple of tough decisions to make. Decisions on whom to keep and whom to let go will require a lot of people’s consensus.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com squashed the New York Yankees’ minimal hope of extending Juan Soto beyond the 2024 season with a hard-hitting fact. Feinsand wrote that Soto is aiming to sign a historic free agency contract next off-season. Moreover, as a Scott Boras client, he is unlikely to provide any discount to any team whatsoever.

At this point, the New York Yankees simply do not have any monetary leverage to lure Juan Soto back to the Bronx. Mark further established how he does not expect Yanks to meet Soto’s free agency demands next off-season. Regardless, the franchise’s focus remains on the upcoming season. The future beyond that is the least of Yanks’ present priorities.
