The New York Yankees were hoping to start the 2024 season on a much more positive and healthier note. However, injury woes are something that never leaves the franchise’s back. Last year, the team entered the opening day with six regular players on the injury list. Now, this year, things seem to be heading the same way.

Jose Trevino is the first one to get injured this spring. While he is expected to be ready for opening day, Oswald Peraza continues to remain on the sidelines with tight tightnesses. Not to forget Alex Verdugo was scratched with leg contusion last week. Meanwhile, in a fresh injury scare, a top reliever fears missing opening day with a nagging shoulder issue.

In a massive setback for the New York Yankees, relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle fears missing the 2024 season opening day game vs Astros with a shoulder niggle. Kahnle was shut down mid-season last year with a shoulder strain. He spent the whole off-season recovering from it. But has fallen behind in rehabilitation as pain perpetuated longer than previously expected. Tommy revealed he began the off-season throwing program late in December because the shoulder pain posed a roadblock. Thus, coming into spring, he couldn’t build up as expected. The pitcher has three six bullpen sessions so far but is yet to pitch in a game. Recently, after his latest pen session, Tommy admitted his worst fears coming true this year.

“It just took longer than I expected for the pain to go away,” Kahnle said. The relief pitcher confirmed that he is pain-free now. But lacks the necessary training to feature in the opening-day game against the Astros. Thus, it is highly likely that Tommy Kahnle will miss the opening day. However, the reliever is confident of pitching in the first week games for the Yankees. He says the worst, i.e., the inflammation has passed, and it’s just recovery that’s taking a little longer. That being said, while Kahnle’s absence for the opening day is viewed as a massive blow, the IL stint could be shorter than previously anticipated. Given the absence of discomfort, the relief corp should be able to pitch in the following series after the one against the Houston Astros. Regardless, in Kahnle’s absence, the Yanks will look to other relievers to step up and fill the void in the bullpen.

Yankees Catcher Gears Up For Spring Debut After Injury Scare

New York Yankees lead catcher, Jose Trevino missed spring training opener with calf injury and has been out of action ever since. He has been practicing in the bullpen since the past couple of weeks. And in a major boost to the franchise, Trevino is slated to make spring debut on Sunday against the Atlanta Braves.

With Kyle Higashioka’s departure, Jose Trevino is expected to lead the Yankees catching depth alongside prospect Austin Wells. His veteran presence in the clubhouse is crucial for the club as Wells lacks the necessary experience to play lead catcher. Moreover, the depth is negligible, which increases Trevino’s significance.
