The New York Yankees haven’t been plagued by injuries this year as much as they suffered last season. The core is still intact and winning games to stand tall in the competitive AL-East table. Having said that, a couple of injuries will for sure start to haunt the Yanks as the season progresses.

For instance, ace pitcher Gerrit Cole is nowhere close to a return, whereas DJ LeMahieu suffered a setback in his most recent rehab assignment. That being said, ahead of the Orioles game, Yankees skipper Aaron Boone shared a couple of crucial injury updates on LeMahieu and backup infielder Jon Berti.

New York Yankees veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu is yet to debut in the 2024 MLB season due to a foot contusion injury sustained during spring training. LeMahieu got hit by a foul ball in spring and was under rehabilitation for over a month. Finally, after weeks of build-up and live batting practices, the third baseman was scheduled for a rehab assignment with Somerset Patriots last month. However, DJ suffered yet another setback as he was removed from his first rehab game just after one bat after LeMahieu complained of soreness. The following medical reports suggested that DJ was suffering from residue edema and thus was shut down for one week to allow the swelling to reduce.

Meanwhile, most recently, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that DJ LeMahieu is feeling great after a week’s rest and will resume baseball activities soon. However, as far as the return timeline is concerned, Boone couldn’t offer a specific or tentative date per se. Nevertheless, for LeMahieu to resume hitting is a massive step in the right direction. Notably, DJ’s injury replacement Jon Berti also went down with a groin injury, which promoted utility player Oswaldo Cabrera to third base. And the switch hitter has been excellent this season with the bat .250 in 100 at-bats. Hence, as and when LeMahieu returns, Boone will have a tough dilemma in accommodating everyone and stacking up the most ideal and balanced starting lineup, which will not hurt the winning momentum.

After DJ LeMahieu’s foot injury, the New York Yankees traded for Jon Berti as an immediate third base replacement. However, after a few games, the reinforcement also joined DJ on the injury list with a groin injury. Nevertheless, the infielder commenced a rehab assignment last week. But skipper a game in between with an alleged setback, confirms Yankee skipper Aaron Boone. Apparently, Berti’s back locked up on him, and hence, he had to sit out of the Patriots’ Wednesday game.

However, the hope is that the setback isn’t extreme and Jon Berti can resume his rehab assignment on Thursday. In another injury update, relief pitcher Nick Burdi had a successful bullpen session and is scheduled to pitch in a rehab game soon before eventually getting activated. As far as Gerrit Cole is concerned, his return until the All-Star break seems unlikely, as the ace has yet to hit the mound.
