The New York Yankees had a terrible season in 2023 as they crashed out of the playoff race for the first time in seven years. Naturally, the entire franchise, especially the ill-performing players, faced intense heat from the dejected fans and critical analysts alike. Thus, many players chose to stay away from social media to keep their mental sanity in check.

One among those groups of players was second baseman Gleyber Torres. Torres did not necessarily have a bad season offensively, as he finished up as the second-best performer for the Yankees after captain Aaron Judge. However, owing to his defensive lapses, Torres also got caught in the vicious circle. Having said that, the baseman recently reappeared on social media and gained the attention of the fans with cryptic tweets.

Gleyber Torres recently reappeared on the social media platform called “X” (previously known as Twitter) and posted a cryptic tweet. He addressed the message to the fans and wrote, “All eyes on me..” The second baseman could be referring to his off-season situation, where his fate hangs in the balance. Torres stays an arbitration-eligible player whose projected salary is expected to touch $15.3 million in 2024. That is remotely close to what Aaron Judge was getting paid last year before signing the massive extension contract. If the Yankees can pay their MVP-level player just $17 million a year, what makes one think they would shell out over $15 million for Torres?

Undoubtedly, Gleyber Torres has had a great year in a season where the rest of the team fell apart. He stayed healthy and posted .273 with 25 homers, 68 RBIs, and .800 OPS across 158 games. He was the only hitter besides Aaron Judge to hit 25 homers or more. Certainly, the infielder has regained his lost form. However, as per the popular rumor, the Yanks are unlikely to retain Torres in 2024. And would most likely use him as a trade chip. Since the infielder is only 26 years old and in the middle of a hot streak, the Bombers can fetch great value. Perhaps even Torres is aware of his fate, which sort of explains the cryptic tweet. All eyes on the upcoming off-season.

Marlins Interested In Gleyber Torres, But There Is A Catch!

As far as the trade rumors are concerned, the Miami Marlins are reported to be a hot landing spot for Gleyber Torres. Various media outlets claimed that the Marlins apparently enquired about Torres in 2022 and still remain interested in landing the infielder. However, the Miami-based team is being put off by the Yankees’ ridiculously high demand.

According to Randy Miller of NJ Media, the Yankees have asked for two 25-year-old starting pitchers, right-hander Edward Cabrera and lefty Braxton Garrett, plus two prospects in exchange for Gleyber Torres. Naturally, even for a high-end team like the Marlins, the asking price is steep and acts as a roadblock. Perhaps the Bombers should rethink the offer if they remain determined to ship away Torres during the upcoming off-season.
