The New York Yankees fielded a young infield filled with top prospects against the Minnesota Twins on Monday’s spring training game.
As the buzz builds for the upcoming MLB season, excitement is running high amongst New York Yankees fans. The source of their excitement is the highly-touted prospects, Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza, who are marking their strong presence in the ongoing spring training session. While both are fighting a battle for the same shortstop spot, only one will emerge victorious.
21-year-old Anthony Volpe has become a household name ever since his exposure to minor leagues. Hence, despite substantial experience, he was called in for spring training, and the prospect has managed to make a name for himself. On the other hand, with a lot more experience, Oswald Peraza entered spring training as the favorite for the shortstop battle. However, Volpe is giving Peraza a run for his money with powerful performances.
Yankees’ Fans Excited As Anthony Vople And Oswald Peraza Clubbed Together At Infield
The shortstop battle at the New York Yankees spring training is fought between Anthony Volpe, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Oswald Peraza. However, the front office prefers Peraza over Volpe for the starting position. Moreover, Volpe’s starting numbers made the decision even more difficult for the team. Hence, they decided to move Volpe to the second base to incorporate both prospects together.
Meanwhile, the fans who voiced their opinion for Anthony Volpe’s inclusion in the opening day roster gave the new lineup a thumbs up. They took to Twitter and urged manager Aaron Boone to continue with the same lineup. A fan even threatened to boycott Yankees games if Volpe misses out on the roster. While this lineup is unlikely to be the final lineup as DJ LeMahieu and Gleyber Torres will make way at second and third base. Hence, Oswaldo Cabrera and Anthony Volpe could highly miss out on the final roster for this season’s opening day.
Anthony Volpe Is Enjoying The Shortstop Battle With Oswald Peraza
While the competition for the shortstop position remains cutthroat and intense, Anthony Volpe hinted at a brewing friendship between him and Oswald Peraza. Volpe said he had never played with Peraza before, and now sharing the same bullpen and line feels surreal. Moreover, the 21-year-old stated that they both share a healthy bond the competition is a friendly one as the main goal is to help the team eventually.
While Anthony Volpe may have rested the final decision on the Yankees’ management, he is making a solid case for himself side by side. Till now, his numbers are skyrocketing. The fans, critics, and his teammates are all in awe of the little dynamite. However, his promotion to the majors looks unlikely, at least on the opening day. But the prospect could get a call-up later in the season for sure.
