Lewis Hamilton is at a crucial juncture with Mercedes this year. He ended his 13-year successful association with the racing outfit earlier this month to don the iconic red overalls in the 2025 season. Naturally, the seven-time world champion British driver would love to finish this coming F1 season on a high.
Mercedes unveiled its 2024 F1 season challenger, W15, on Valentine’s Day last week. The car had its it’s iconic silver color patch at the front. But was mostly made of carbon. Moreover, the team had high hopes for the structural and aerodynamic changes introduced in the machinery during the winter. However, Lewis Hamilton issued a damning verdict after day 2 of pre-season testing at Bahrain.
Lewis Hamilton Still Not Happy With W15’s Pace Despite Notable Improvements
F1 pre-season testing kicked off at the Bahrain circuit earlier this week, and Mercedes put their new season challenger, W15, on track with George Russell on Day 1. Furthermore, Lewis Hamilton took the car for a spin on day 2 and drove rigorously throughout the day to get comfortable with the machinery. Post the session, Lewis addressed the media and issued his initial verdict on W15’s overall performance. Hamilton claimed the car was not where it was supposed to be in terms of pace. But Mercedes kind of predicted that when they arrived for testing this week. Overall, Lewis is hopeful for a better season. “We’ve got a great platform to build on,” said Hamilton.
Lewis Hamilton added that Mercedes will retrieve the data of pre-season testing and see how they can improve before the season opener in Bahrain. “I’m really excited for the start of the season next week, and we’ll be heading into it in good shape,” affirmed Hamilton. That being said, the Silver Arrows camp looks positive ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix. As per insiders, W15 got rid of the spiteful rear end. The car is more stable and predictable on the corners, which was an area of concern for the seven-time world champion. Additionally, the W15’s seating position has been pushed back, allowing Lewis more clarity on his judgment. However, as far as straight-line pace and DRS advantage are concerned, W15 still has a lot of ground to cover. Hopefully, as and when the upgrades are introduced, W15 will become more competitive.
“Hardest Decision” Hamilton On Ferrari Move!
Lewis Hamilton turned for a press conference after Day 2 of pre-season Bahrain testing. Undoubtedly, the first question he faced was related to his shock move to Ferrari. The British driver opined that leaving Mercedes was the hardest decision he had to make in his entire racing career. “I think it’s like 26 years, they’ve supported me,” said Lewis.
However, Lewis Hamilton explained his intentions, saying the time was right for him to write his own story at Ferrari. Regardless, the Briton considers Mercedes a part of who he is, as the duo scripted history together in the past decade. That is something he takes pride in. “I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved,” added Hamilton.
