Oswald Peraza, a top prospect in the New York Yankees organization, could potentially see some playing time in the near future after Anthony Volpe struggles to fit in.
The New York Yankees faced an intense dilemma during the infamous shortstop battle fought between the farm system’s top prospects, Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza. Both youngsters fought tooth and nail and left no room for error. However, Volpe’s late push with the bat did the trick, and he earned the much-deserved debut cap.
However, the transition hasn’t been that great for the rookie. Since his debut, Anthony Volpe has played 11 games and hit .129 with three runs, four hits, and five stolen bases. Of course, he is just 21 years old with a bright future ahead. But, if his slow run continues to prolong, the Yankees might consider calling up another top prospect from the minor league.
Oswald Peraza Could Likely Replace Volpe
When Josh Donaldson suffered a hamstring injury last week, the fans expected the New York Yankees to call up Oswald Peraza from the minor league. Peraza, who lost a hard-fought shortstop battle during spring training, has been doing well in the Triple-A playing for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. However, he missed a few games due to a hamstring pull, which eventually delayed his major league call-up. Regardless, the shortstop is back after a quick recovery and is banging the selectors’ doors.
Since Anthony Volpe has struggled so far in his debut stint with the Yankees, Oswald Peraza‘s call-up in the foreseeable future cannot be ruled out. In seven games for the Railriders, he has scored two runs, eight hits, four RBIs, and three stolen bases with a batting average of .276. Moreover, Peraza’s defense has never been an issue, as it is his strongest suit. While Peraza has primarily played shortstop in the minors, he has also seen some time at second base and third base. He has a strong arm and good defensive skills, which could make him a good fit in the bullpen. Hence, if Volpe’s struggle continues to linger, Oswald Peraza could receive a surprise major league call-up.
Anthony Volpe Sits Out Of The Tuesday’s Game Against The Guardians
Amid speculations, the New York Yankees just added fuel to the fire. The front office decided to bench Anthony Volpe for Tuesday afternoon’s matchup against the Cleveland Guardians. Utility player Oswaldo Cabrera started as a shortstop instead. However, the Bombers cleared all the rumors and said it’s just a routine day off for the rookie, who has not missed a single game this season.
For what it’s worth, Anthony Volpe’s struggles have been a bit of a concern for the Yankees. He has failed to live up to the spring training hype in the major league. Runs have pretty much dried up from his end, which hinders his place in the team, especially when his fellow competitor, Oswald Peraza, is bossing the minor league. Hence, Volpe has to up his game to retain his prestigious place in the starting lineup.
