Sergio Perez Has Huge Advantage Over Max Verstappen At Azerbaijan GP, Likely To Close Points Gap To Lead Drivers’ Standings

Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are not just teammates but also each other’s biggest threats in the current F1 season. The Dutchman is gearing up to win his third consecutive driver’s title. At the same time, his teammate Checo is looking forward to his maiden title. Up till the last season, everybody thought Perez would only play the role of a supporting driver to Max Verstappen.

But after the Saudia Arabia Grand Prix, this is clear that the Mexican is ready to win it all himself this year. And why not, as both of them have got the fastest car on the grid? It is only fair that both should get the same chance to jump to win the title. Sergio Perez, after winning the race in Jeddah, mentioned, “I want to win the title.” Currently, Max still has got a healthy lead of 15 points over Checo after the first three races of the season. But looks like this lead will not stay with the current champion for long.

According to Emerson Fittipaldi, former Brazilian F1 two-time champion, feels that Checo has a better shot of winning the Azerbaijan Grand Prix than Max Verstappen. The Brazilian two-time former champion has been following the dynamic between the two Red Bull drivers. He feels that Sergio Perez is strong at street circuits. Hence, Fittipaldi has his bet on Checo to beat Max Verstappen in Baku and close the gap between them.

The former Lotus F1 team driver mentions that it is not easy to race on street circuits. Checo’s style of driving fits very well on street tracks. It is essential to master the technique of driving fast on street races. The Brazilian former champion feels that Checo has a good record in street races. And as he won the race in Jeddah, he must be motivated to win more. Emerson has no doubt that the Mexican is ready to give his best in the upcoming races to beat Max and win the title himself. Why play the supporting role anymore? When can Checo win it all himself?

It will be an arduous task to beat Max Verstappen, as Perez himself knows that the Dutchman is the hardest to beat on the grid at present. There are not many racers at present who is as competitive as Verstappen. The Dutchman is ruthless and is ready to destroy any competitor who comes his way. Even if it is his teammate, Max won’t allow anybody to overtake him.

During the Jeddah Grand Prix, Max fell far behind in the 15th position as he was not feeling very well that day. It was looking like an easy victory for Sergio Perez. But Max Verstappen accelerated during the final lap and climbed up to P2, and won the fastest lap of the race, adding an extra point to his tally. As a result, Verstappen was able to hold on to the first position on the driver’s standings. After the Australian Grand Prix, Verstappen improved the lead as he won the race, and Perez dropped to P5. Now what can Checo do in Baku later this month?
