The New York Yankees have been steady in the 2024 MLB season, unlike last year. With a 19-12 record, the team is in second place in the AL East. However, the Bronx Bombers will definitely have to start looking out for their future with important free agency coming up in 2025.

Juan Soto, the New York Yankees finest addition of the off-season, is set to leave next off-season as an unrestricted free agent. However, if he were to leave, the Bombers would be required to fill his void with a nearly similar offensive powerhouse. And if some rumors are to be believed, Houston Astros star infielder could be made available.

Juan Soto seems unlikely to stay with the New York Yankees long-term, given his market value of $500 million. Needless to say, the Bombers front office will remain busy next off-season to plug the hole left by Soto. Amid this, Darragh McDonald of MLB trade rumors suggested the Yanks trade for star third baseman Alex Bregman from postseason rivals Houston Astros. The Astros are currently placed at the bottom of the AL-West with an abysmal 10-19 record. Hence, McDonald feels that if the Astros dip further into the season, they might let go of Bregman during the trade deadline. That being said, Alex Bregman, known for his potent bat and stellar defensive skills, would undoubtedly be a valuable addition to NYY.

The infielder has been a consistent performer for the Houston Astros, earning All-Star honors and garnering MVP votes in multiple seasons. Hence, adding a proven run producer like Bregman could provide the spark they need to compete at the highest level. However, any potential trade for Bregman would come at a steep price. Despite Astors’ poor run, they won’t settle for less and could demand farm system prospects in exchange. Additionally, there are other factors to consider, including Bregman’s contract situation. The infielder is under team control through the 2024 season, with a significant salary owed to him over the remaining years of his deal. Taking on Bregman’s contract would require the Yanks to commit significant financial resources. Hence, it’s important the Yanks make an informed decision.

After nearly a month of recovery from stress foot fracture, the New York Yankees veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu commenced his rehab assignment with Double-A affiliated team Somerset Patriots a week ago. However, after just one at-bat, LeMahieu was removed from the game after recurring soreness episodes. And now the manager has confirmed that DJ will be shut down for another week.

Aaron Boone added that DJ LeMahieu has been diagnosed with residual edema. He will be re-evaluated in the coming week, and the veteran’s return timeline has yet to be fixed. Notably, DJ repeatedly tried to push forward his rehab assignment before the doctors intervened. It looks like LeMahieu was never fully healed, and the rush could prove to be devastating.
