The New York Yankees did not have a great season in 2023. They had a long Injured List. Moreover, the NY side finished fourth in the American League East. On top of that, the Bronx Bombers finished with an awful 82-80 season. They could not make the postseason for the first time since 2016. Despite all these setbacks, the NY side can feel positive about one of the rookies they had last year. Anthony Volpe was quite impressive last year. However, injuries did not spare him either, as they did not spare Jasson Dominguez. Moreover, the NY side must take some steps to prevent these injuries as much as possible to young guns, especially.

Dominguez had to undergo Tommy John surgery. But Anthony Volpe is ready for the upcoming season. Lately, last season’s rookie mentioned the news of Michael King and Drew Thorpe’s trade to the San Diego Padres was a bittersweet moment when he heard it. However, Volpe mentioned that he was not unfamiliar with the business side of the sport. He saw the organization trade many of his friends while he was climbing the ranks to get his place in the big league team. Anyhow, the young Yankee is ready to have a sophomore surge in 2024.

Recently, in an interview at Pinstripe Pride on Saturday, during an autograph signing in New Jersey’s American Dream Mall, Anthony Volpe said it is hard to forget where he was when he heard the news of his friends getting traded. He was with Kyle Higashioka in Arizona when the Yankees traded Michael King and Drew Thorpe. At least, that’s when he got the news. But Volpe believes it is a great opportunity for everyone, and he feels the excitement moving forward. The young Yankee believes the team can rebound this year after last season’s failure.

However, luck might play an important role. For instance, if the Yankees have better health, that can really help the team to go forward. Moreover, a sophomore surge from Anthony Volpe would quite certainly help them a lot. In 2023, the neophyte became the first NY side’s rookie to have a 20-20 season record. Later, he also won a Gold Glove. Scouts can notice that Volpe had ups and downs at the plate. But the rookie did not let his frustrations hurt his defensive play. That’s why he won the Gold Glove deservingly. But the Yankees need Volpe to get better in his offense.

Anthony Volpe finished the 2023 season with an uneven performance. He averaged .209, a .283 OBP, and an 81 OPS+. Moreover, he had a 52:167 walk: strikeout (ratio). He played over 159 games. Later, Aaron Boone mentioned during the Winter Meetings in December that Volpe has the ability to control the strike zone in his DNA.

The Yankees skipper noted that he really needs to get better in that area. Moreover, Boone really hopes to see those improvements in 2024. On top of that, Aaron Boone added that Anthony Volpe has a certain makeup and intelligence that will allow him to improve.
