Sergio Perez, the Mexican racing driver currently employed at Red Bull Racing, is standing at a crucial juncture of his professional racing career. His existing contract with the drink based dominant outfit runs out by the end of the year, with the future beyond still left undecided.
That being said, Checo started the 2024 F1 season on a high note, thus making a strong case of a possible extension with Red Bull Racing, a team currently dominating the tracks of F1. However, contractual disagreements have stalled the process as the two parties are apparently at cross roads over the length of the extension deal.
Sergio Perez Adamant On 2-Year Extension Contract From Red Bull
Mexican driver Sergio Perez bounced back quickly and effortlessly in the 2024 season after a horror stint in 2023. He attained four podium finishes in the first five races of the calendar. But he is yet to edge past his teammate and reigning world champion Max Verstappen. Regardless, the present performance is good enough for Checo to seek a contract extension from Red Bull. His present deal will run out by the end of the year, and he is desperate to save his racing career. That being said, RB also seems willing to extend Checo’s stay on the team, but only on certain terms and conditions. As per Fox Sports Mexico, the Bulls offered a 1-year extension to Perez, which the Mexican driver didn’t agree with.
Apparently, Sergio Perez thinks he deserves a two-year extension deal and has issued a counteroffer to Red Bull. Checo wants to be a part of the 2026 engine regulation overhaul year and help the Bulls achieve excellence. However, on the other hand, the drink-based outfit intends to keep its options open given the rise of youth talent. Interestingly, RB senior advisor Helmut Marko opined earlier that Checo will be judged on his performance and not any other parameter whatsoever. He is not entitled to a seat just because a regulation overhaul is happening in 2026. “Nothing’s been signed, so everything is still open,” Checo confirmed that an extension deal is yet to be signed with RB. However, at the same time, Perez expects future certainty before the impending summer break.
Checo Believes Max Verstappen Damping His Rebound Year
In a candid interview, Red Bull driver Sergio Perez said that if it weren’t for his teammate Max Verstappen, he would have shined more this year. Apparently, Checo feels Max’s unreal achievements are overshadowing his rebound performance this year, which is a constant challenge he has faced since joining the team. But regardless, the best he can do is ignore.
Checo feels that on the brighter side, having Max Verstappen as a teammate forces him to push his boundaries and strike for excellence. “I know that I have to deliver a perfect weekend to be able to beat him,” said Perez. And as far as contract uncertainty is concerned, Checo is not feeling distracted or pressured at all. He knows he needs to perform for things to fall in his favor, and that will be his focus henceforth.
