The Formula One world is filled with excitement and passion. With plenty of talented drivers in the paddock, the competition is stiff. Thus, an unexpected result could result in an outburst of emotions. In the heat of the moment, racers often use foul language on the team radio. While some defend the racers, claiming it to be their passion for racing, others feel it’s obscene.

Recently, FIA president Ben Sulayem made a shocking remark about the “swearing row.” His comments ignited a new controversy, which split the F1 community. Lewis Hamilton was visibly unhappy with the way of portraying the issue. Although he somewhat agreed with Sulayem’s statement, he affirmed the choice of words was “stereotypical.” The RBR starlet Max Verstappen also shared his thoughts on the “swearing ban” rule by FIA.

In an interview with Autosport before the Singapore Grand Prix, FIA President Ben Sulayem highlighted the importance of differentiating between motorsport and rap music. He asserted that the two are fundamentally different, implying that the frequent use of expletives typical in rap should not be present in motorsport.

The seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton acknowledged the significance of reducing swearing in the sport, especially considering its wide-ranging audience, including children. Reflecting on his younger years, Hamilton admitted that he often spoke impulsively, not fully considering the impact of his words. He believes that many drivers will eventually undersstand the need for more restriction, suggesting that implementing penalties for swearing could effectively curb the behavior.

While Hamilton agrees with the importance of moderating language, he also stressed drivers’ need to express their emotions. He believes it’s essential for drivers to show their passion and not behave like robots. Recognizing the support he receives from over 2,000 individuals working for his success, Hamilton highlighted that his words and actions have implications for many people who sacrifice their time for him. He strives to channel his aggression constructively, understanding the responsibility that comes with his platform.

Max Verstappen Criticizes FIA’s “Swearing Ban”

Max Verstappen expressed his views on the impact of swearing in motorsport, emphasizing that children will inevitably hear expletives as they grow up, regardless of parental controls. He pointed out that exposure to swearing is a natural part of life, particularly as children socialize with peers.

Moroever, the Dutchman highlighted that broadcasting certain language and behavior is a unique aspect of motorsport, as drivers are often mic’d up during races. He suggested that teams could handle such matters internally by not broadcasting inappropriate remarks, minimizing public awareness, and managing issues more discreetly.
