Mercedes has been looking at Fernando Alonso as a potential replacement for Lewis Hamilton. However, there is no certainty that it will be Alonso. The seven-time champion took the sport by storm after announcing his switch to Ferrari. Perhaps the announcement caught the team principal of the Silver Arrows off guard. The whole team is looking at all the possibilities before making the final decision. Are they willing to sign the oldest active racer in the sport to replace the seven-time champion? The Spaniard is a two-time champion. Perhaps Alonso is the ideal choice because he is one of the three drivers currently racing who has tasted the World Championship multiple times.

The other two racers are Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Of course, Lewis Hamilton is ready to take on the new challenge of his career to drive for the most successful team in history. On the other hand, Max is on his way to winning his fourth consecutive championship with Red Bull. It would be another big storm for the sport if the Dutchman decides to switch teams. Moreover, he has a contract with the Austrian side till 2028. On the other hand, Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez might need a new contract in 2025. Perhaps Daniel Ricciardo will replace Checo finally in 2025. A lot of changes are happening ahead of the 2025 season.

Last year, Fernando Alonso impressed everybody in his debut season with Aston Martin. He started the 2023 season pretty well. In fact, after the first few races of 2023, the Spaniard looked like the best behind the two Red Bull drivers – Max and Checo. But in the second half of the season, Aston Martin lost its pace and performance. Eventually, they fell behind Mercedes, McLaren and Ferrari. At the end of the 2024 season, Alonso will be available in the Driver’s market. Several teams are willing to land him.

After Hamilton broke the internet announcing his switch to Ferrari, Toto Wolff and the manager of the Spaniard, Flavio Briatore, had breakfast at a cafe and shared a photo on Instagram. It is the same cafe that Fernando Alonso frequently visited since he returned from the Saudi Arabian GP. Later, Alonso shared a photo prominently displaying the same mug that was in the photo of Wolff and Flavio. This social media post of the Spaniard sparked speculation about Alonso’s move to Mercedes. But the two-time champion had asked for some time to contemplate his future in F1.

Daniel Ricciardo’s Move To Red Bull Might Be Questionable

After the first two races in 2024, the Aussie racer looked like he was struggling with pace and grip. Moreover, he had a nightmarish pit stop in Saudi Arabia that eventually led the Aussie to finish at P16. It was a tough weekend for Ricciardo, full of frustration. Moreover, the former Red Bull driver displayed a lackluster performance in the first couple of races of the ongoing season.

As a result, the Aussie might jeopardize his chances of gaining a Red Bull seat in 2025, replacing Sergio Perez. On the other hand, the Austrian team may have to look at other options like Lance Stroll, Yuki Tsunoda, Alex Albon, or even Lando Norris. Otherwise, they might just extend Checo’s contract for a few more years. He was pretty good after the first two races in Bahrain and Jeddah this year.
