More Trouble For The Yankees! Anthony Rizzo Could Opt Out Of His Contract

The Yankees\’ story in the 2022 MLB season has been one full of injuries and players\’ non-availabilities. Meanwhile, after the season has come to an end, the team is looking to regroup a strong squad that could help them lift the world title. There is no certainty about Aaron Judge\’s future in th the pinstripe blues. At the same, adding to the troubles, now reports are indicating another important player of the Yankees, Anthony Rizzo, may opt out of his contract. 

Anthony Rizzo Might Part Ways From The Yankees!

New York Yankees 2022 MLB season has been full of individual brilliance. In addition to Aaron Judge having a historic season, Anthony Rizzo has also been a brilliant performer for the side throughout the season. However, a recent report suggests that the Bombers may lose Rizzo. Chances are that the player might opt out of his contract with the team.

As per a report by The Athletic, baseman Anthony Rizzo of the New York Yankees is planning to exercise his right to terminate his contract before the 2023 campaign. He still wants a chance to earn a multi-year salary despite having a $16 million player option.  

Last year, Rizzo agreed to a two-year, $32 million contract. However, the player has the option to skip the second year. The skilled slugger might opt out of returning in 2023 and appears to be open to returning to the market. Anthony performed exceptionally well enough this past season to merit a long-term commitment, so that is what happened. He has every incentive not to activate his option and to try to turn his strong 2022 into a two- or three-year deal.

One of the few Yankees who contributed during the postseason was Rizzo. He is a strong and capable first baseman whom the Yankees\’ fans love. His teammates\’ infielders\’ poor throws are particularly well-captured by him. Rizzo\’s departure is seen as a league-average performance because of his impressive.224/.338/.480 slash line, 32 home runs, and 132 wRC+ 100. He would cause the Yankees unneeded problems because he produced 32% more than his peer.

There are internal candidates to take Rizzo\’s place in the event that the baseman eventually quits. Even if the Yankees did decide to shift DJ LeMahieu to first base, they would then be limited in their ability to switch positions. Furthermore, in that final situation, they shouldn\’t trade Gleyber Torres, yet that\’s what they appear to be looking for. There aren\’t any prospects close to the majors who are considered lockboxes to start at the first base above average.
