Several World Human Rights Groups went against FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem for the political speech ban he implemented, which also means a prohibition on the freedom of speech of the drivers. FIA aimed to remove all the unnecessary elements when watching motorsports. The president wanted a neutral state in Formula One, so that audience could enjoy racing to the fullest without any interference from other matters. But no drivers ever took their freedom of speech to be a disturbance in Formula One, right?
Also, none other than Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel used to be active in protesting against social injustices. They did express their support for black lives matter and LGBTQ campaigns through printed T-shirts and masks on the podiums of Formula One. Hamilton often tries to spread awareness among fans by raising voices against social and environmental issues through his F1 face. But with the ban, now he is handicapped. This seems a direct target on the seven-time world champion as it will mostly only affect him. At present, things are getting represented as FIA vs. Lewis Hamilton.
Max Verstappen Supports Lewis Hamilton For Making Social Issues Speeches
Many Formula One drivers emerged to criticize FIA for the decision that prior permission will be necessary before speaking on matters beyond the sport. Recently Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas gave their statements against FIA’s regulations, which were meant to favor Lewis Hamilton. And now, even the biggest on-track enemy, Max Verstappen, stood against the abolishment of the freedom of expression.
The Red Bull star backed Valtteri Bottas and weighed in on the criticism of FIA’s decision. He said, “Some people [basically drivers, probably only Lewis Hamilton at present] are more outspoken than others. I am normally not like that because –
at first, it is tough for a racing driver to be fully committed to the sport as well, in terms of going into everything and making sure that you know all the facts right.” However, it does not matter if Verstappen speaks on matters or not. He does not feel it should get banned in Formula One. “I don’t think it is necessary,” he said.
Speaking with Sky Sports, Max Verstappen focused on the fact that the drivers will not be allowed to wear clothing of their choice or take any action that FIA will perceive as political or a personal agenda. “In a way, FIA is basically making sure people are not allowed to speak anymore,” said Verstappen. He believes all drivers should be allowed to speak. Some will do it a bit more some will remain quiet. All with their choice. No one has the right to take their freedom away. In the end, Max Verstappen said, “The ban is a bit UNNECESSARY.” Therefore, in the fight of FIA Vs. Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen stand with the Mercedes driver.
