Sadly, the New York Yankees lost the series opener to St.Louis Cardinals by 11-4. The main culprit of the loss was starting pitcher of the game, Luis Severino. In four innings pitched, he gave away season-high nine runs, out of which only seven were earned, and the rest two came out of a fielding error from utility player Oswaldo Cabrera.

Regardless, Luis Severino’s terrible time on the mound cannot be ignored. The pitcher seemed to have regained his old rhythm during his last start, wherein he pitched six shutout innings against the Rangers. However, it proved to be a false pretense as Severino again blew out a crucial start. With that, Severino has himself put his future with the Yankees in jeopardy.

Luis Severino Left “Frustrated” With Latest Blowout Vs. Cardinals

Right-hand pitcher Luis Severino is in the last year of his four-year $40 million contract extension with the New York Yankees. He has a club option for an additional season. But his future in pinstripes largely depends on his current numbers. And Severino, on his part, is doing too little to help his case. With the recent blowout innings against the Cardinals, his ERA has soared to 6.30. He look immensely frustrated with himself after the game. In an interview, the pitcher admitted to not being at his absolute best since the start of the season. He intends to help the team to the best of his abilities. However, the pitcher made the claim to be healthy, which rules out fitness issues.

So what the future holds for Luis Severino? The best-case realistic scenario sees his departure from the Bronx. Despite being the longest-tenured Yankee, Severino will have to make room for someone better. The Yankees can either trade him for a good bargain or let him choose his fate in free agency next season. On the flip side, there is still a lot of time left in the ongoing season. If Severino can turn things around from here, he can up his stakes to steal a good deal. Regardless, his future as a Yankee looks very much finished unless the GM, Brian Cashman, pulls out another gamble.

Yankees Fall To Cardinals In A Storm-Hit Series

After losing the series opener by 11-4, the New York Yankees set out for a comeback Saturday. However, adverse weather conditions postponed the game to a doubleheader on Sunday. The visitors won the second game owing to an offensive explosion from Anthony Volpe and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Short on starters, the Yankees fielded the bullpen, who did an excellent job of holding off the runs.

However, things went haywire in the next and final game. Despite Gerrit Cole‘s impressive outing, the Yankees’ offense could not stand tall against Jordan Montgomery. The Cardinals starter did not allow a single run in 6.2 innings which put the Bombers on the backfoot. They failed to recover and hence split the doubleheader and lost the series. After a mixed road trip, the team will head back home to host rising East rivals, Baltimore Orioles, in a three-game series.
