Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)

Lewis Hamilton joined Mercedes a decade ago with an aim of winning the Formula One championship, and the rest is history. No other team and its driver have been able to dominate the grid as the German team did from 2014 to 2021. That is the reason why the current status of Mercedes is hard to digest for the fans.

In a matter of a couple of years, Mercedes has fallen from the level of being a powerhouse of F1. Albeit Lewis Hamilton is still with the German team, the status has changed upside down. The team is working on several issues with W14, but still, no luck with a Grand Prix win this season as of yet. That is why, Gerhard Berger believes that the seven-time world champion will make a shocking move at the end of this year.

Berger Thinks Hamilton Should Join Ferrari To Change His Luck

Hamilton might have said “Mercedes Forever” once, but that does not mean anything. The former Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger believes that in F1, such words mean nothing. If a team comes up with a good prospect for a driver, then chances are the driver is going to say, ‘yes.’ According to Berger, it is a dream for every racer to be part of the Red Devils (Ferrari).

When Mercedes cannot provide Lewis Hamilton with a championship-winning car, then moving to Ferrari might be a better option in the long run. Mercedes has expressed that their current target is to beat Ferrari and Aston Martin. They are not even thinking about Red Bull at present. So, if the red devils have a car that can actually compete with the Austrian team, then it is a likely scenario for Lewis Hamilton to move to Ferrari.

However, Hamilton lately mentioned that “I wanted to end my career with Mercedes as I signed with them back in 1997. But I’m feeling great, so I would like to go on for a little longer.” Lewis is a big fan of Ayrton Senna, and even he had been in Ferrari for a while. However, Berger asserted that almost every great of the game wants to be part of Ferrari once in their career, even if they don’t win. Back in time, Lewis Hamilton left McLaren to win championships with Mercedes. He had been a part of McLaren for a long time too. If winning is the motivation, then why can’t he leave Mercedes as well? Although Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has mentioned that they don’t have a Plan B if Lewis leaves after the end of this season.

Clearly, Mercedes’ slump is not doing the seven-time champion any good, as he is losing precious time. Lewis Hamilton is 38, as opposed to the current champion, Max Verstappen, who is 25. The Briton clearly does not have the benefit of the status of youth anymore to support his long-term plans in F1. But Mercedes is unable to provide Hamilton with a car that will help him to win the coveted eighth title.

It has been challenging for the Silver Arrows since the new era of cost cap began. Lewis Hamilton came very close to winning the eighth driver’s title in 2021 until the momentum shifted towards Max Verstappen and Red Bull. As it turns out, like last season, even in the current year, the German team just cannot fix their car. Lewis Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes is also supposed to end after the end of the current season.
