New York Yankees baseman Gleyber Torres has a rollercoaster season this year. While he thrived as a hitter, his defensive lapses cost the Yanks crucial games during the difficult stretch. Moreover, Torres is an impending free agent, desperately trying to hold on to his roster spot for the next season.

Gleyber Torres has been the New York Yankees’ second-best hitter this year. In 133 games, the baseman has hit .270 with 23 home runs, 57 RBIs and .798 OPS. He was performing to his potential when the rest of the squad succumbed to grave slumps. However, Torres’ dream run came to a halt on Friday as he was mysteriously snubbed from the lineup at the last minute.

The New York Yankees were scheduled to face arch-rivals Houston Astros in a three-game series over the weekend. The series opener took place on Friday. Top minor league prospects Jasson Dominguez and Austin Wells made their debuts, whereas Carlos Rodon took the mound for his scheduled start. However, the team’s regular second baseman, Gleyber Torres, was scratched off from the lineup at the last minute. As per media reports, he is dealing with some back issues. Hence, the team chose to rest him as a precautionary measure. Subsequently, Oswald Peraza took his place at second base, whereas Isiah Kiner-Falefa replaced Peraza at third. Having said that, an official word is yet to come out from the Yankee camp. The alleged injury or any sort of discomfort remains unconfirmed for now.

Gleyber Torres was on the field the other day, wherein he robbed the Yankees of a chance at a series sweep against the Detroit Tigers. The series finale stayed tied in the ninth inning owing to Anthony Volpe’s three-run game-tying homer. The game was then pushed to the 10th inning, wherein the Tigers got first and second base covered. However, a minor throwing error from Torres’ end cost the Yanks the game. Jack Short hit a drive straight to the reliever, who made a throw at second base to Torres to get the man at the second out. However, Gleyber badly timed his throw at the first base as it landed miles away. In the meantime, the Tiger hitter made it home to secure the tie-breaking run.

On Friday, the New York Yankees roster expanded to 28. That allowed the club to call up their highly regarded minor league prospects. No.2 prospect Jasson Dominguez and No.8 prospect Austin Wells were inducted into the roster and immediately made their debuts against the Houston Astros. Ahead of their debuts, the skipper revealed the plan devised by the management for the rookie duo.

As per the Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Jasson Dominguez will be playing center field, with Austin Wells going behind the plate. Also, the prospect duo will be playing a lot in the coming month of September. The Yanks want to test out top prospects of the club’s farm system to see who seems best fit for the 2023 MLB season roster.
