The 2023 MLB season is just weeks away from now. Ahead of the opening day, spring training will commence in a few days to provide the team with a window to test their respective rosters. Meanwhile, the training is crucial for the New York Yankees as they have much to figure out. The roster’s strong, but a few loopholes in the lineup will hurt them in the long run.
The Yankees are yet to decide on their starting shortstop for the opening day. Oswald Peraza is the front-runner for the post. However, Oswald will have to fight hard as a few nominees from the Yankees bullpen are also in the contest for the spot. Recently, MLB issued its top shortstop prospects for 2023 rankings. And the results are unexpected and surprising.
Anthony Volpe Ranked No.1 Shortstop Prospect For 2023 By MLB
Anthony Volpe is the Yankees’ top prospect. He started out Somerset Patriots and was later promoted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In the last minor league season, Volpe scored 21 home runs and 65 RBIs and maintained an average of .249. The 21-year-old has shown immense growth since 2019 and is considered the next big thing for the Yankees. On top of that, the recent MLB pipeline ranking proves Volpe’s caliber.
MLB Pipeline issued a top 10 shortstop prospects ranking for the 2023 MLB season. Surprisingly, Anthony Volpe grabbed the top spot, whereas Oswald Peraza failed to feature in the top 10. Despite that, Volpe’s inclusion in the big league looks unlikely, as Oswald and Isiah are ahead in the succession line. However, Yankees manager, Aaron Boone, did not rule Anthony out and asserted the 21-year-old would have a chance to fight it in spring training. Nonetheless, there is no denying the fact that Anthony Volpe is a future star and will get his due at the right time.
Fans Excited For Volpe, Wants To See Him Debut This Season
Meanwhile, the Bombers fans are echoing in unison for Volpe’s inclusion. The recent ranking has the fans on the edge of their seats. They want Anthony Volpe to don the pinstriped and debut in the major league this season itself. However, a fraction of the fans criticized the Yankees’ front office for biasedness. The fans believe Aaron Boone and management are favoring Oswald and IKF ahead of Volpe and that Volpe’s talent is getting wasted in the process.

Well, what the Yankees decide at the end of spring training will be an exciting watch. For now, Oswald Peraza looks like the most sought-after candidate by the Yanks. On the other hand, the New York Yankees have devoted their focus to building a solid offense for the 2023 MLB season. Moreover, they lived up to the expectation a bit, but the roster still needs a few quality players. Also, injury concerns have started to creep in within the camp. Hence, the Yanks need to stay vigilant moving into the opening day.
