The New York Yankees have been through hell in 2023. They might have had a winning season with an 82-80 record, but it was far from their expectations. In fact, it was a tremendous shame because they barely managed to win it. But they could not make the postseason. Since 2016, for the first time, the Bronx Bombers failed to make the postseason. In the previous few seasons, they were at least making the playoffs. But this year, the NY side deteriorated even further.

Clearly, they are desperately in need of significant changes. But these changes are not only roster-related but also the other departments like analytics, coaching, and philosophy. Moreover, the NY side needs to make sure the players they want to keep on their roster are in sound health and mind. It is because the season has been a nightmare for everybody, fans, coaches, and especially the players. Most of all, the two lefties, Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes, had disappointed the fans and management this year.

Both Rodon and Cortes combined had four different stints in this year’s Injured List. Also, they had combined 26 starts with an 8-10 record. Moreover, they had a combined 5.92 ERA in 127.2 innings. The previous year was a different story for both of them. They were All-Star players, with Cortes having a breakout season wearing the pinstripe jersey and Rodon dealing for the Giants in the National League. Lately, Brian Cashman mentioned that Rodon might be healthy. But the Yankees pitcher is not happy about the 2023 season.

The Yankees will need Carlos Rodon to pick up his game soon because they will pay him $27 million per year with five more years remaining in his contract. On the other hand, Brian Cashman said Nestor Cortes is currently busy with his throwing program in Miami. Since September, he has been feeling good and healthy, throwing bullpens. And nothing has changed so far about that. Moreover, Cashman feels positive about the fact that if the Yankees get what they expect from both these players and also from the alternatives, it becomes a whole other ball team.

Yankees Are Going Through Big Changes This Offseason

It is now clear as crystal that Sean Casey won’t return as a hitting coach. Hence, they are already looking for a new hitting coach. Moreover, a recent rumor is that the Yankees hired a consulting firm to see through their analytics and figure out their past mistakes. However, the General Manager in Scottsdale mentioned that analytics don’t drive the Yankees. Brian Cashman is more keen to know about how’s the roster doing. Moreover, the NY side had plenty of injury scares in the last season.

They need some young, healthy players to join the 40-member roster to bring balance and stability. For that, the Yankees have already waived six players from their roster, including Domingo German and Franchy Cordero. There are plenty more players who are just taking up a lot of space in their roster. The Yankees need to get rid of them this offseason if they want to fight back really hard next season.
