New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres survived a trade threat last season with an impressive performance on the plate. He finished an abysmal year with a .273 average, 25 home runs, and 68 RBIs and also emerged as the team’s second-best hitter besides captain Aaron Judge.

Accordingly, he fetched a $14.2 million arbitration deal with the New York Yankees earlier this year. However, Gleyber Torres was unable to carry forward the form in 2024 and hit a grave slump in April. He has zero home runs in 90 at-bats and speculations suggest that perhaps, Torres is feeling the pressure of impending free agency.

As Gleyber Torres navigates through the early stages of the 2024 MLB season, he finds himself at a crucial juncture in his career. With free agency looming on the horizon, there’s natural speculation and scrutiny surrounding his performance. This year, Torres has hit a new slump with an abysmal .189 average and zero home runs in 25 games. At this rate, his plans of securing an extension contract from the New York Yankees would be shattered before the end of the year. Notably, as much as the second baseman intends to finish his career in the Bronx, the Yanks confirmed that no extension talks have been initiated as of now. However, Torres remains steadfast in his approach, focusing solely on the present and striving to contribute to the success of the team.

While speaking to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, Gleyber Torres confirmed that his focus is on the present as he wants to do the right things for the team as well as himself. “I’m just trying to get a great season,” said Torres. However, his performance does not align with his words, and that’s leading to frustration among the fans. Throughout his career, the infielder has shown flashes of brilliance, earning All-Star honors and displaying his offensive prowess at times. However, he’s also faced challenges and endured periods of inconsistency, which have led to scrutiny from fans and pundits alike. As Torres embarks on what could be a pivotal season for his future, he understands the importance of staying focused and delivering results on the field. It would be interesting to see what the future holds for Gleyber Torres.

With Gleyber Torres usually struggling on the plate, the Yankees Evil Empire social handle on Twitter suggests a potential injury scare for the Yankees second baseman. The user pointed out that since getting hit on the thumb during the Yankees opening day game against the Houston Astros, Torres hasn’t been hitting the way he used to last year.

“Maybe he’s trying to play through the pain?’ quizzed the internet user. Notably, Gleyber Torres also got hit on the foot during a recent home series against the Tampa Bay Rays. However, he continued to play, and so far, any health concerns have been dismissed by the Yankees organization. Regardless, with the infielder’s form going downhill, these rumors will continue to rise.
