D’Angelo Russell, a talented point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, is on the verge of making NBA history.

The LA Lakers are set to host Dallas Mavericks tonight for their second matchup of the season. The Lakers cruised through a perfect victory after trailing by over 20 points during halftime. This time around, the stakes are much higher for the purple and gold as they try to make a way to the playoffs. Moreover, they lost the previous fixture to the Rockets, which left a significant dent in their odds of qualification.

LeBron James and Mo Bamba will grace the bench as they are still healing from the injuries sustained earlier this month. Moreover, Anthony Davis, who surprisingly missed the last game, is likely to return. Amid this, the Lakers’ main key to victory remains their newest acquisition, D’Angelo Russell. Since his return from an ankle injury, the point guard has been the Lakers’ best man on the court and often overshadowed Davis. Moving to tonight’s game, he will be eyeing a unique record.

The LA Lakers acquired D’Angelo Russell from Minnesota Timberwolves this season while overhauling their starting lineup. The point guard replaced Westbrook and immediately stepped up to the role. This season, he is averaging 18 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds per game. Moreover, his three-point average is up to 2.9 per game, with a shooting percentage of 39.3% from the deep. Since he arrived in Hollywood, the numbers have only elevated.

Meanwhile, The 27-year-old player is just one three-pointer away from achieving a remarkable feat. Russell currently sits with Dennis Scott and Wayne Ellington on the all-time high three-pointers list at the 88th position. He needs just one more three-pointer to surpass them and become the sole bearer of the 88th spot. His overall career tally stands at 1,214 three-pointers over 486 game appearances, while the other two took over 600 games to reach the feat. Furthermore, the fans are backing D’Angelo Russell to achieve that feat tonight itself.

Meanwhile, the LA Lakers have already started to draw up plans for the upcoming free agency. They reportedly are very keen on retaining their current lineup as they have produced fruitful results for them in the ongoing season. The one man they are extremely keen on keeping under the fold is point guard D’Angelo Russell. Apparently, the Lakers acquired him with a view of him being a long-term point guard solution for the team.

Furthermore, Jovan Buha of The Athletic has said that both Russell and the Los Angeles Lakers share a mutual interest in terms of a contract extension deal. Russ wants to continue in the team as much as the Lakers plan on keeping him in Hollywood. It all comes down to the terms, as the point guard is likely to use his performance as leverage to extract as much money as he can.
