The mid-season trade deadline isn’t expiring unit August 1. But rumours involving top performing teams like New York Yankees haven’t stopped coming. The Bronx Bombers are sitting at the top of AL-East with 50-24 record and the current trajectory should take them to postseason comfortably.

However, to accomplish the dream, the New York Yankees will have to address certain roster loopholes. With Anthony Rizzo struggling with form and injuries, the Yanks need solid solution at first base for the rest of the season. And Oswaldo Cabrera or DJ LeMahieu are certainly not one. Perhaps, the Bombers can sort help from city rivals Mets.

New York Yankees To Trade Pete Alonso From Mets?

First and third base has been a serious problem for the New York Yankees this 2024 MLB season. While Anthony Rizzo has suffered an injury scare following a prolonged slump, DJ LeMahieu is struggling to find his groove at no.9 after a delayed start to the season. Hence, ahead of the trade deadline, Zach Rymer of Bleacher Report has linked the Bombers to New York Mets’ superstar Pete Alonso. In a high-risk trade, Zach transferred Pete, RHP Adam Ottavino, and cash considerations to the Yanks in exchange for top pitching prospect Chase Hampton. Notably, Pete Alonso hasn’t been himself this year, with a .232 batting average, 15 home runs, 37 RBIs, and a .771 OPS in 70 games.

However, Zach Rymer believes a change of scenery would invoke the inner beast in Pete Alonso. But at the same time, Zach’s trade deal is extremely risky for the New York Yankees. They will lose top pitching prospect Chase Hampton for half a year of Alonso’s services. Pete is an impending free agent who is most likely to re-sign with the Mets next off-season. And Adam Ottavino is carrying a 5.19 ERA this year. While Chase Hampton is yet to debut in minor leagues this year due to a UCL strain, he still remains one of the franchise’s valuable prospects. Undoubtedly, having Pete Alonso in the lineup could be a massive boost for the Yanks at first base. However, the deal is only worth it if Alonso commits to it in the long term. Otherwise, the Yanks are better off with veteran Anthony Rizzo or even utility player Oswaldo Cabrera at first base.

What Happened to Anthony Rizzo?

Anthony Rizzo, the New York Yankees veteran first baseman, is likely headed to IL after an ugly collision against the Red Sox on Sunday. Rizzo took a sprint to first base after drilling a line drive. But he ended up colliding with a Red Sox defender. He tripped and fell onto the ground before rolling thrice on the pitch. Rizzo’s arm was heavily impacted.

The first baseman seemed in excruciating pain as the Yankees took him out of the game. Yankees manager Aaron Boone insists that Anthony Rizzo’s imaging scans are negative. But the veteran is still experiencing some pain, which makes a probable IL stint highly likely. Rizzo will undergo additional tests with better equipment in New York before the Yankees take a final call.
