Jasson Dominguez, one of the most special talents grooming inside the New York Yankees farm system, showed the world what he was capable of last year. In his September debut, Dominguez went on a home run spree and unlocked multiple franchise records to catch the league’s attention.
However, the dream run ended with a Tommy John surgery. Since October last year, Jasson Dominguez has been put under a grueling rehab session and commenced a rehab assignment last week. And in a latest positive step, Dominguez stepped into the outfield for the first time since the surgery panned out last season.
Jasson Dominguez Plays Center-Field In Latest Rehab Game
New York Yankees most prolific prospect, Jasson Dominguez, suffered from a UCL tear injury last season just in the middle of his sensational major league debut. He had four home runs in 8 games before a gruesome injury ruled him out for nearly 7-8 months. After careful contemplation, Dominguez underwent Tommy John surgery and remained under intense care of Yanks medical and condition staff. He played spring training to a limited capacity and fell back on his rehab program. That being said, Jasson Dominguez finally commenced his much-awaited rehab assignment with Single-A Tarpons. He was strictly put on DH duties for a minimum of 2 weeks. With his 20-game rehab stint nearing its end, Dominguez embraced his defensive responsibilities.
On Wednesday, Jasson Dominguez played center field for the first time since Tommy John surgery. He played five innings in the outfield with Double-A Somerset Patriots and reported no setbacks. Notably, through 11 rehab games that Jasson has played, he has hit .286 with a .810 OPS. He also hit a homer in his first rehab game. It’s important to note that Dominguez’s 20-game rehab stint will end on June 2, meaning the Yankees will either have to recall him to the majors or option the outfielder back to minor leagues. Given the outfield situation, it seems Jasson will likely have to settle in the minors for the time being and focus on his outfield build-up. He can stay on stand-in in case one of Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Juan Soto, or Alex Verdugo ends up on the injury list sometime in the latter half of the season.

Given how Gil was never a first-choice pitcher, it’s an incredible feat. And with Gerrit Cole returning, Gil will retain his spot if he continues to post such good starts.
