In a major setback of the season, the New York Yankees lost two back-to-back series for the first time this year. After losing to the Red Sox at Fenway Park, the Bombers dropped the ball at home against AL-East rivals Baltimore Orioles, with the latest humiliating 17-5 loss coming on Thursday.

On a terrible day in and out, the New York Yankees witnessed a collective failure of the hitters and especially the pitchers. And now, to further add to the growing misery, second baseman Gleyber Torres has picked up an unfortunate injury and had to be taken out of the field during the series finale.

Aaron Boone Downplays Gleyber Torres’ Groin Injury Concern

In a setback for the New York Yankees, infielder Gleyber Torres exited the series finale against the Baltimore Orioles due to a groin strain. Torres, who had homered in the bottom of the second innings, was already having a tough day in the field when the injury setback ruled him out. The second baseman messed up two errors in consecutive plays in the fifth inning, which resulted in a massive lead for the Orioles. Eventually, Torres had to be removed in the seventh innings after complaining of discomfort in the groin area. They later announced that Torres was diagnosed with groin strain with the severity yet unknown. However, manager Aaron Boone seemingly downplayed any concern in the post-game press conference.

Aaron Boone claimed that Gleyber Torres’ injury is nothing major, and he does not expect him to miss time. The Yankees pulling him out of the game was a mere precautionary measure. Notably, the impending free agent is having a terrible season this year. He entered Thursday’s series finale 0-for-15 in his previous five games with an abysmal .629 OPS for the season.

Not only that, Torres has made 11 errors in 76 games after making 15 in 145 games in 2023. Having said that, the Bronx Bombers’ troubles will mount if Torres ends up missing time. DJ LeMahieu is already struggling at third base, and utility player Oswaldo Cabrera is largely inexperienced at second. Hence, if Torres gets ruled out in the near future, the Yanks will struggle massively to fill the void due to a lack of depth and existing injuries.

Yankees Option Troubling Reliever To Triple-A

After a 17-5 embarrassing loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the New York Yankees took some bold measures and scuffled the bullpen. In a major roster move, the team sent back struggling reliever Ron Marinaccio to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Ron threw 1.0 inning, allowing no hits, one run, one walk and one hit-by-pitch on Thursday and had been less impactful in the last few games.

Interestingly, Ron Marinaccio has a 2.84 ERA with 19 strikeouts and a 1.11 WHIP in 19.0 innings pitched this year. That being said, the roster move was a ripple effect of LHP Tim Hill’s signing. Hill has been added to the active roster after agreeing on a one-year short-term deal. Additionally, LHP Clayton Andrews has been designated for assignment to make space for Hill in the 40-man roster.
