The world of Formula One is rife with surprises. Few could have predicted Lewis Hamilton signing with Ferrari just months after renewing his contract with Mercedes. Yet, shocking moves like this are not uncommon in the sport.

While Hamilton’s departure is a blow to the Silver Arrows, the next potential driver switch could cause celebration. Max Verstappen, currently the top driver in the sport, might consider options beyond Red Bull, especially with the upcoming changes to the power units. This could mean that Toto Wolff’s long-standing ambition to bring the Dutchman to Mercedes might finally become a reality. However, a recent report from a Dutch journalist suggests otherwise.

The German Marque is no longer chasing the RBR triple champion for the upcoming season. Reports suggest the team will soon announce Kimi Antonelli as the second driver for 2025 and beyond. Further, a report by De Telegraaf journalist Eric Van Haren claims the Silver Arrows are no longer looking to sign in Verstappen. Additionally, the Dutch journalist claimed Antonelli will be the new permanent face of the Brackley-based outfit with George Russell.

However, earlier, another report sent ripples through the F1 community, hinting at a possible partnership between Max Verstappen and Aston Martin. The British team, which has also secured Adrian Newey to enhance its position as a leading F1 contender, appeared ready to lure the Dutch champion. However, as reported by F1insider.com, Verstappen has shown no interest in joining the Silverstone-based outfit. Instead, Mercedes might still have a chance to sign the three-time world champion.

Despite Lawrence Stroll’s ambitions to elevate Aston Martin to the top of Formula 1, the team has faced difficulties this season. Verstappen has emphasized in a recent interview that his future decisions will be driven by performance. Consequently, Mercedes, Aston Martin’s neighbor in Brackley, seems to be a more likely destination for the Dutch star. With Mercedes gaining momentum this season, their prospects look more promising than ever. Their expertise in the powertrain department further bolsters their potential to dominate the circuit from 2026 onwards, a level of dominance they have already achieved in the post-hybrid era.

According to Robert Doornbos, Max Verstappen’s relationship with Mercedes is solid. Mercedes currently has an open seat for the 2025 season, and it is anticipated that Kimi Antonelli will be announced as a new driver alongside George Russell during the Monza weekend. Despite this, Doornbos believes that Verstappen will join Mercedes in 2026. Aston Martin, however, is expected to make a solid push to recruit him, sparing no expense in their efforts to attract the Dutch driver.
