Luis Gil, the New York Yankees sensational rookie starting pitcher, won several American League records for his exceptional stretch in May when he pitched seven scoreless starts. He suddenly became the leading pitcher for AL All-Star selection. However, all good things eventually come to an end.
On Thursday, the New York Yankees faced the Baltimore Orioles in the series decider at Yankee Stadium. However, what looked to be a promising game initially soon turned into a one-sided contest courtesy of starter Luis Gil’s terrible display on the mound. And with a horrifying loss, the Yanks snapped out of a remarkable season streak.
Luis Gil Allows 7 Runs In 1.1 Innings In A Worst Season Start By A Yankee
In a highly anticipated series finale between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles, Luis Gil took the mound with high expectations. But he quickly found himself in trouble in what turned out to be a nightmare for the Yanks that too at home. Gil allowed a double after Juan Soto misplayed in right field. While the pitcher limited the initial damage to one run, he completely lost the plot in the second inning. With just one out, Gil allowed as many as 6 runs on eight hits, two walks, one home run and a hit-by-pitch run in the top of the second innings. He eventually had to be pulled out by manager Aaron Boone as relief pitchers were called up after just 1.1 innings.
By the time he was pulled from the mound, the damage was done, and the Yanks found themselves in an insurmountable deficit. That being said, with an early exit from the mound, Luis Gil forced the New York Yankees to snap out of a record streak. The Yankee starting pitchers went 76 games in a row with a start of 4+ innings, which was the longest in the franchise history and the seventh-longest season-opening streak by an MLB team since 1900. Not only that, owing to Gil’s early blowout, the Yanks suffered a miserable 17-5 loss and recorded consecutive series losses for the first time this season. Regardless, Luis Gil has been the most impactful pitcher for the Bombers this year, and such off-days are bound to happen. It’s an opportunity for him to learn and improve his raw talent.
Luis Gil Gutted To Let Yankees Down In Crucial Series Finale
Despite being a rookie pitcher pitching in the most competitive land of Yankee Stadium, Luis Gil is extremely self-aware. Following a 7-run short start against the Baltimore Orioles, Gil took the blame for the team’s 17-5 embarrassing defeat. He said in baseball, one always experiences good and bad days.
And Thursday was a bad day for him. He let the team down massively and completely feels responsible for the series loss against Orioles. However, the season is still long and despite being a rookie, Gil hasn’t set a foot wrong until this week. Moreover, now that Gerrit Cole is also back in the rotation, the Yankees can dream for better days.
