The New York Yankees had a pretty good start to the 2024 regular season. It raises hope for the fans because of what happened last year. In 2023, the Bronx Bombers had a season when they failed big time. Their ace pitcher Gerrit Cole, ahead of the 2024 spring training, had said, “The wound is still fresh from last year for all of us.” Albeit the ace starter had his career-best season in 2023, the team could not make the postseason. The NY side failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

They had a terrible 82-80 record. Moreover, it was their worst season in the last 30 years. Coming off that kind of a season, fans wondered what the Yankees could do this year as they made some significant changes. Clearly, the Bronx Bombers look like a whole new team, as they are 23-13 at present. Currently, they hold second place in the American League East division. Lately, the starting pitcher Nestor Cortes praised the home fans for giving them an “Extra edge” to dominate the opponents.

The starting pitcher of the New York Yankees, Nestor Cortes, had been a bit shaky on the road. However, the same hurler has been brilliant at home. Fans might wonder why there have been two different versions of Cortes in away and home games. Generally, the starting pitcher gives away more hits than the innings he pitches on the road. It has been 26 hits out of 20 innings. Moreover, Nestor Cortes has a through-the-roof ERA when the team is on the road (6.75). However, when he pitches at home, he gave away 16 hits with four extra bases and then gave away five earned runs. But he has been mostly dominant over 28 1/3 innings. After the Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers by a clean sweep, as per The New York Post, Nestor Cortes mentioned that he loves pitching in front of the home crowd.

He even went back to 2021 while describing how involved the fans are in the Yankees games. Cortes said when he gets two strikes, the noise gets louder, and that just works as “An Extra Edge.” That’s why Cortes feels the home advantage has been really working for him. On Sunday, Nestor Cortes was very effective as he got nine strikeouts. He even limited a couple of base runners over the first six innings. Moreover, Cortes said, as per The New York Post, that he has been able to focus on the team and himself. He is just trying to give his team a chance to win.

The Dominican superstar was again instrumental in helping the Yankees win. On Sunday, he hit a three-run double that snapped a tie in the seventh inning. Eventually, the Yankees won 5-2 against the Detroit side in a rain-shortened game. After losing a series against the Baltimore Orioles, it was important for Aaron Boone’s side to return to winning ways.

And they just did it in style against the Tigers at home. On Sunday, Cortes and Juan Soto helped the team complete a three-game sweep. Now, the NY side has the same number of wins that the Orioles have so far. But they have two more losses as they have played a couple more games than the Baltimore side.
