Aaron Judge Becomes The Yankees\’ 16th Captain!

It was just yesterday when the Yankees and Aaron Judge finalized the official contract that binds the player with the team for nine years. Now just one day later, the team named Aaron Judge as their captain.

In addition to having the highest deal in Yankees history, Aaron Judge also holds the team record for most home runs. Therefore, it should not be surprising that he has been named the team\’s newest captain. The current American League MVP became the highest-paid position player in MLB history when he agreed to a nine-year, $360 million contract with the Bronx, committing him to stay in the city. On Wednesday, General Manager Hal Steinbrenner officially announced Judge\’s captivity.

After Derek Jeter\’s retirement, Judge became the first captain of the Yankees. Steinbrenner decided whether Judge would go next. While on the phone with Judge to settle his new contract with the Yankees, he informed the latter of his choice. When the news of Judge\’s new deal was announced during a press conference at the Stadium, Jeter was seated next to Judge on the dais. In addition, Willie Randolph, another former captain, was present.

After a spectacular but underwhelming free agency offseason, the imposing right fielder, Judge, decided to stay as the face of the MLB\’s biggest market. For the Yankees, Aaron Judge had a historic season. He set a new mark for the most home runs in a single season for both the team and the American League as a whole. Roger Maris was surpassed by Aaron Judge for the American League\’s all-time home run record on October 5, 2022. Judge hit his record-breaking 62nd home run of the year.

Since \”The Captain,\” Derek Jeter was appointed captain, Judge is the first player to hold that position. The illustrious shortstop played his entire career with New York, where he won five World Series championships. And he was selected to the All-Star team 14 times throughout his Hall of Fame career. Judge and the Yankees will attempt to bring home the team\’s first World Series title since 2009. They failed to do so in the 2022 campaign. In order to further the cause, general manager Brian Cashman took a number of actions this offseason. Among them was the six-year, $162 million contract he gave free agent pitcher Carlos Rodon.
