Aaron Judge is coming off another historic season, likely earning his second American League MVP award after leading MLB in home runs (58), RBIs (144), and OPS (1.144) in 2024. His offensive dominance cements his status as the cornerstone of the Yankees’ lineup.

However, questions surrounding his long-term defensive role are gaining traction, particularly as the Yankees navigate their roster strategy this offseason. With Juan Soto also likely to depart, the New York Yankees are reevaluating their priorities. But is shifting Aaron Judge a reasonable option for Yanks?

Aaron Judge, 32, has primarily excelled as a right fielder with an elite arm and strong defensive metrics. However, the presence of Juan Soto, who occupied right field after arriving in a blockbuster trade, forced Judge into center field for much of the 2024 season. While serviceable in the center, Judge is naturally more suited to the right field, where his defensive abilities shine. The Yankees are now contemplating Judge’s future beyond the outfield, envisioning a gradual transition to first base as he progresses into his mid-30s. According to SNY’s Andy Martino, the organization has long considered first base as Judge’s eventual destination, a move that would capitalize on his height, athleticism, and footwork while reducing the physical toll on his body.

This potential shift influences how the Yankees approach their vacancy at first base following Anthony Rizzo’s departure to free agency. The Yankees’ deep pool of outfield prospects also plays a role in this decision. Jasson Domínguez and Spencer Jones, two of the organization’s most promising young players, are nearing MLB readiness. Their impending arrivals could further crowd the outfield, increasing the urgency to move one of the established stars, Judge or Soto, to the infield. The team is reportedly eyeing short-term options at first base, aiming to leave room for either Judge or Soto to transition there in the coming years. Soto, though not a natural fit at first, is another candidate for the position due to his limitations as a right fielder. For now, the Yankees are expected to sign a stopgap first baseman, possibly reuniting with Rizzo or acquiring a veteran on a short-term deal. This approach maintains flexibility for future adjustments while avoiding major disruptions to the current roster.

MLB Analyst Questions Juan Soto’s Market Value

An MLB analyst has sparked some debate regarding the Los Angeles Dodgers’ pursuit of Juan Soto in free agency, arguing that the superstar may not be worth the astronomical price some expect. The analyst pointed out that Soto, while undeniably talented, doesn’t bring the same unique value as Shohei Ohtani, a two-way player with unparalleled global appeal.

“Ohtani is an international superstar, and his ability to contribute both as a pitcher and a hitter makes him a once-in-a-lifetime talent,” the analyst explained. In contrast, the analyst emphasized that Soto, while one of the best hitters in baseball, doesn’t possess the same multi-dimensional allure as Ohtani. “Juan Soto is just not that type of guy,” the analyst added.
