The New York Yankees have done a great job to be 17-10 so far. Although they used to be number one in the American League East division until they lost the last game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Baltimore Orioles have taken the first place at present based on the win percentage. However, a second-place spot after 27 games is not at all a bad start for the Bronx Bombers. It could have been much worse, especially after the disastrous season that happened last year. The NY side finished fourth in the American League East last year as they had an 82-80 record, making the last season the worst for the franchise in the last 30 years.
Next, in Spring Training this year, two impactful veteran players got hurt badly. Clearly, the Bronx Bombers have faced many problems with injuries in the past few seasons. But this year, the two most prominent injured players have been All-Star utility player DJ LeMahieu and last year’s AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole. However, the good news for the Yankees faithful is that these impactful players are going through a speedy recovery process and can join the team sooner than expected.
Gerrit Cole And DJ LeMahieu Coming Back Soon For The Bronx Bombers
So far, the Yankees have been impressive, especially, the new star in the team, Juan Soto. Even without Gerrit Cole, their ace hurler, the NY side’s pitchers have done a decent job. However, the offense has been a bit inconsistent but has managed to win 17 games already. All these performances came without the AL 2023 Cy Young winner and the All-Star veteran infielder. But at present, the two impactful players are nearing a return. It is great news for the Bronx Bombers but scary news for the opponents. Gerrit Cole has been throwing and seems to get ready to have another great season. He could play in minor league games soon.
On the other hand, DJ LeMahieu was about to start a minor league assignment. But he could not play the whole Double A Somerset game because of his right foot soreness. Also, DJ has been shut down for a week. Albeit that’s scary news, as per the New York Daily News Sports’ Gary Phillips, the Yankees manager said the veteran infielder’s fracture has healed completely. But Aaron Boone also mentioned that the latest images showed the swelling in his recovering foot. Moreover, Jone Berti may also start a rehab assignment next Sunday. DJ LeMahieu will take time to recover because of his swelling. But since his fracture got healed, the Yankees might soon have him back.
Injuries Haven’t Been Able To Stop The Yankees From Winning This Year
Last year, when Aaron Judge had a freak accident at the Los Angeles Dodgers fence, it was a big blow for the NY side. The captain had to miss almost two months and 35 games on the trot due to a toe injury he suffered at the LA fence. Later, it turned out that Judge had a torn ligament. Moreover, 2023 saw several more injuries to key players like Anthony Rizzo and Jasson Dominguez.
But in 2024, the Yankees missed Gerrit Cole and DJ LeMahieu after sustaining injuries in the Spring Training. However, that did not weaken the team and their confidence ahead of the 2024 season. Moreover, the addition of Juan Soto seems to be working like a charm. The Dominican superstar, with his attitude, has boosted the morale of the team and the offense, of course.
