Mercedes is looking to end their losing drought. Last year, they finished the season being winless. The year before that, they won one race. A team that used to dominate the grid for eight years in a row has won a single Grand Prix over the past couple of years. It has been a tremendous shame for the fans and the team in general. They would like to get back to winning ways. Last year, two powerhouses, Red Bull and Ferrari, tasted victory. Albeit, Red Bull won 21 races out of 22 overall GPs. But at least Ferrari was able to win one race in the Red Bull dominant season.

Even in 2022, Ferrari won multiple races, whereas Red Bull won 17 Grands Prix. But what about the other powerhouse – Mercedes? Just one for the Silver Arrows in the span of a couple of seasons. Toto Wolff’s team would like to change that scenario in 2024. Moreover, it is even more emotional for the team as Lewis Hamilton is driving for the last time in the Silver Arrows uniform. Next year, fans will see the seven-time champion in the iconic “Red Uniform.” Hence, Mercedes is looking to eliminate weaknesses in their 2024 challenger to get the best result.

Albeit, Mercedes had pretty good practice sessions in Bahrain, the opening GP did not end as well as the German team would have liked. But it seems the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix might present more challenges for the Silver Arrows. There was a huge gap between the two Mercedes drivers during the couple of practice sessions in Jeddah this year. First of all, George Russell was impressive as he was among the top three racers for the most part of the free practice sessions. On the other hand, Lewis Hamilton finished at P9. Later, the seven-time champion mentioned he faced trouble with the rear of the car. He was not comfortable with the car’s rear.

However, a source close to the Silver Arrows told FORMU1A.UNO, that the team did not have any problems during the free practice on Thursday. That’s why Mercedes is looking forward to postponing judgments on the engine overheating problem. Later, George Russell mentioned in an interview that it was fun to get back on the track in Jeddah. It is a fun circuit with high speed, and it feels Russell. Moreover, Mercedes is still learning about their new platform. Russell said sometimes the car looked good on the flying laps, but some other times it felt not so good in terms of race pace.

Moreover, George Russell said after the free practice sessions that they did not have the W15 car “In the perfect window today.” That’s what Russell said after FP2. But during FP1, both Russell and Hamilton tried out different things with different setups to gather as much data as possible on the new car.

Hence, it makes sense that the two Mercedes drivers had polar opposite configurations in terms of their race in Jeddah. Moreover, George Russell believes that it is only the second race of the new season. And the car is so new that they still have a lot to learn about it.
