The New York Yankees had been looking for a dependable starting pitcher since the start of the offseason. They were hot favorites to land the Japanese sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto. However, things did not quite work out as the NY side had hoped. The Japanese ace eventually signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Moreover, the Bronx Bombers let Yamamoto go to the Dodgers just for two more years, the term of the contract, and $25 million more. Meanwhile, the NY side focused on fixing their issues in the outfield. The Yankees managed to land some top lefty sluggers, especially Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, and Trent Grisham. It was their primary goal to sign a couple of top lefty sluggers.
That’s what they did. But to seal those deals, they sacrificed their pitching depth. At one point in the offseason, the Yankees were facing a worsening pitching situation. But then, they signed Marcus Stroman for a two-year deal to increase their starters depth. However, it could have been even more dependable and satisfying if they managed to sign Blake Snell. And then, there were other options like Wandy Peralta to increase depth in the bullpen. But Peralta recently signed with the San Diego Padres. Andy Martino, MLB Insider, mentioned the NY side will miss him.
Why Martino Thinks Yankees Will Miss Peralta?
On the baseball show SNY, Andy Martino mentioned the Dominican pitcher is underrated because he is not as flashy as a closer. Anyhow, Martino said Wandy Peralta has been an elite pitcher for the past six seasons in the Major League Baseball. He has a lot of experience that makes him a perfect fit for the San Diego Padres roster. But Martino mentioned the Yankees really wanted him and will most certainly miss him. As per Andy Martino, the Yankees even offered him a multiple-year deal. But some other franchise offered Peralta a four-year deal.

The New York Post suggests both the city franchises wanted Peralta. But the NY Mets and their city rivals made a mistake missing out on the reliever. Moreover, the former Yankees reliever signed a four-year deal worth $16.5 million with the Padres. Peralta also needs to go through with the physical to complete the move. There are more reports about Peralta’s move to the Padres. It says his contract has three opt-out clauses. Hence, he can choose to be a free agent at the end of each of the three seasons.
Now, What Are The Remaining Options For The NY Side?
The NY Yankees are more or less okay with the roster they have got at present. But they know that one more dependable pitcher can make the roster look more solid. Wandy Peralta could have been a great addition. But that’s in the past now. Moreover, the Bronx Bombers can either accept the asking price of Blake Snell and sign the best-starting pitcher available.
Or they can keep looking elsewhere. For instance, the Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes is a viable option. The NY side can get him for a year. Burnes will be a free agent at the end of the 2024 season. Keynan Middleton is another pitcher the Yankees can sign this offseason.
