Brian Cashman, the New York Yankees longest-tenured general manager, confirmed the team’s plans to add more reinforcements to the pitching depth. Cashman stated that front office officials remain in talks with a couple of trade targets as well as free agents. Therefore, multiple speculations gained momentum to figure out what the Bombers were up to.

One such speculation linked the New York Yankees to former Houston Astros reliever Hector Neris. The reliever opted out of his player option after delivering a standout season. He understandably intended to explore the market for better monetary gains. While the Bronx Bombers were floated as perennial contenders, city rivals have reportedly entered the pursuit.

After signing Marcus Stroman, the New York Yankeesrotational woes for the impending season ceased to exist. However, the team is still currently in play for bullpen reinforcements. Moreover, as per reports, the front office remains in talks with former Houston Astros reliever Hector Neris. The pitcher tested free agency waters after option out of player option. Neris pitched a career-best season in 2023. He posted a 1.71 ERA across 71 games, which included two saves. Thus, the relief pitcher remains a hot pick in the market. Having said that, the Bronx Bombers have been linked to the pitcher and also floated as the top landing spot. Apparently, Hector is seeking a $7-11 million deal per year for a maximum of two seasons.

However, in the latest turn of events, the New York Mets have reportedly entered the sweepstakes out of nowhere. Andy Martino of SNY reported the new development first and cited league officials as the source. Of course, the New York Yankees would be taken aback. However, they are unlikely to take a step back. Hector Neris is their best bet with respect to bullpen reinforcement. He possesses a fastball velocity of 93 mph and an exit velocity of 86.5 mph. Regardless, for the Yanks, this unexpected challenge underscores the competitive nature of the free-agent market. The outcome of this rivalry in the reliever pursuit could have ripple effects on both teams. Overall, the stakes are high. And the battle for bullpen supremacy adds an extra layer of excitement to the off-season narrative in the Big Apple.

Besides Hector Neris, the New York Yankees are reportedly in conversation with Keynan Middleton and Wandy Peralta. As per MLB.com, the Bombers are intrigued with the idea of a reunion. However, a deal is yet to come through. Peralta remained the team’s most-used fireballer in the 2023 season. Not only that, he recorded a breakthrough season with a 2.83 ERA.

On the other hand, Keynan Middleton arrived in the Bronx via trade from the Chicago White Sox. And immediately caused a controversy after exposing White Sox’s problematic clubhouse culture. On the mound, he pitched a couple of noteworthy innings. But injury ended his debut season in the Bronx prematurely. Subsequently, the pitcher was released ahead of the off-season.
