The New York Yankees 2023 MLB season is actively slipping away from their hands. With 41 games left on the schedule, the team stands 6.5 games below the playoff wildcard spot. Having said that, all results are possible at the moment. Baseball’s unpredictable nature does provide the Yanks a ray of hope. But there are some players who can use the rest of the season to make a difference and prove their worth. Here are five such players who can emerge as standouts by the end of the year.
1. Luis Severino
The troubled starting pitcher, Luis Severino, recently displayed signs of improvement as he managed to lower his ERA to 7.98. But he still has a lot to prove. The impending free agent has already lowered his value with a disastrous season this year. Hence, entering free agency is not the ideal choice. Under such circumstances, retaining the roster spot with the Yankees will require him to turn the season around dramatically. He has six weeks at his helm to at least show significant signs of improvement and earn the trust of the front office.
2. Randy Vasquez/Jhony Brito
Right-handed duo Randy Vasquez and Jhony Brito earned a rotation spot this season in the wake of injuries. While Brito landed back to Triple-A after opening against the Braves, Brito has a start scheduled for Friday against the Red Sox. Having said that, both the right-handers have been impressive this season and stand a chance at making it to the Yankees rotation next season. Next year’s rotational lineup could consist of Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, and Clarke Schmidt. That leaves one spot which both Brito and Vasquez can claim by making an impact in the next six weeks.
3. Anthony Volpe
Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe kicked off the season with high expectations. While he lived up to it to an extent, it’s not nearly close to being Rookie of the Year worthy. Still, Volpe has developed significantly as a player. He got used to major league pitching and learned to make necessary adjustments on the plate. In 121 games so far, he has hit .213 with 16 homers, 47 RBIs, and .680 OPS. That is more than good enough for a rookie. Meanwhile, for the next six weeks, Volpe’s goal should be to grind toward the very end and try to play the full 162 games. That will prove his longevity and fitness. The rest can take care of itself.
4. Everson Pereira
New York Yankees outfield prospect Everson Pereira will be up for promotion sometime in the next six weeks. He is currently ruling the minor league by hitting .308 with a .877 OPS in 32 games. Moreover, the outfielder remains very much in the team’s future plans. Pereira has the potential to end the Yank’s long-withstanding left-field woes. He has a strong arm and is quite athletic in the outfield. Everson has the chance to secure a roster spot for the 2024 season by showing signs of life whenever he is up for promotion.
