The New York Yankees’ number one prospect, Anthony Volpe, is likely to contest for these three positions this season.
Anthony Volpe, the Yankees’ first-round draft pick in 2019, has been making waves in the organization with his impressive performance during spring training. The shortstop is ranked 5th in the overall MLB prospects list and first for the Yankees this season. Moreover, along with hard-hitting skills, Volpe has impressed everyone with his electric defensive skills as well. While he is not expected to make the 2023 MLB opening day roster, there is a chance that he could earn a call-up later in the season. Meanwhile, here are three jobs that Volpe could potentially steal this season:
1. Third Base
For the New York Yankees, Josh Donaldson is likely to start as a third base this season. While rumors surrounding his trade are rife, the baseman has one last shot at redemption. He is currently in his second stint with the Bombers and is desperately trying to make up for last year’s bad season. However, this year, the Yankees are planning to move DH Giancarlo Stanton to the outfield in order to keep him less prone to injuries. Hence, there is a chance that Josh could be asked to move into the DH role. Thus, the third base will open up for Anthony Volpe. He could come in at Josh’s position and score some quick runs.
2. Starting Shortstop
Anthony Volpe, the starting shortstop, could also retain his designated position. Before the commencement of spring training, manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Volpe would audition for the shortstop role. Volpe has a record of playing more than 200 games as a starting shortstop in the minor league. However, he faces intense competition from the Yanks’ regular shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa and front office favored prospect, Oswald Peraza. Hence, the 21-year-old will have to pile up more numbers to beat the duo and steal that shortstop position.
3. Second Base
The second base position is up for grabs, as Gleyber Torres‘ trade rumors have been rife for a while. If Torres fails to step up, the Yankees could turn to Volpe to take over the job. Despite being a shortstop, Volpe has also spent some time at second base and could potentially make the transition to the position in the long run. Second base is a perfect position for Volpe, considering his lack of arm strength. However, with DJ LeMahieu experimenting at all bases, he is also a competitor for Volpe at second base.
Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that Anthony Volpe is still just 21 years old. It’s unlikely that he will make a major impact on the Yankees this season, especially given the team’s depth at many positions. However, if he continues to impress in the minor leagues, it’s not out of the question that he could earn a call-up later in the season and potentially make an impact in the majors for the New York Yankees.
